Hi all.
I have a friends horse at my stable who has thrush. But also there are maggots in there. Looks like they are in the crevis just above the frog eating away and making holes. If she uses peroxide will this get rid of them and how does she apply the peroxide? Also is it contagious to my ponies? ! is in the same field as him but the other 1 is on his own. The peroxide she has is 12%.

Any info greatful

Thx Karen

Dont panic about the maggots, they are actually eating the dead tissue (the nasty black stuff) and although it sounds horrid they are helping clean up the infection and will not damage the healthy parts of the foot.

Tell your friend to go to the chemist and buy a big syringe (about a quid) and then use this to squirt in half peroxide and half water. It will go fizzy but this is a good thing, its creating oxygen and the thrush bacteria are anaerobic which means they cannot live in the presence of O2.

Keep the foot clean and free from mud as much as possible.

Its very unlikely that another pony will pick up the infection but make sure you dont use the same hoof pick as the thrushy pony.

Best thing is to ask your farrier for some advice. Peroxide is fantastic for thrush and I would have thought it would kill maggots but you need to make sure you get the dead ones out. You can administer peroxide with a syringe (available from the chemist when you buy it) and gently squirt over the affected areas and when the peroxide comes in contact it should bubble. Careful with your hand and horses skin as it is an irritant so wear gloves if unsure.

Spaniel - I thought it had to be a special type of maggot to be beneficial as regular flies will produce maggots that eat both live and dead flesh (obviously you only want them to eat the dead stuff)

My friend has a horse with maggoty feet! Our vets (Walmsleys) say to spray with Frontline flea spray! But before this, she used to flush out with peroxide, and as already mentioned its nothing to worry about!

My Wooley has just had this! The farrier came, trimmed the frog hard back, flushed out all the maggots and applied some Life Science data Lab stuff. I put this on every day for a week, the thrush went away and all is well. I nearly had a heart attack when I saw the maggots.
