Hi Im new here Im in the process of buying my first horse afetr a bad fall 4 years ago. The horse Im looking to buy is a 15hh mare (cob) i have riden etc etc but the lady was honest and said she has Thrush which will be healed by the time I get her. Im getting a 5 grade vetting done also. Is thrush a cause for concern. Any help would be great as Im a complete novice.

Thrush can be bad enough to make a horse lame, but usually it is a smelly nuisance and can be quickly cleared up by appropriate treatment.

Your vet ought to note it, if the lady does not manage to clear it up by the time it is vetted. I can't imagine he would fail the horse unless it was a really bad infection.

thank you, i know she lives out all the time and the fields are dam etc etc thanks for you help no doubt iill be back with my concerns etc etc im britains most nervous rider after all!!

You just need to keep picking the horses feet out, I scrub mine with a mild solution of hibi scrub if I have a problem, but you can buy stuff to get rid of it.

we always used a 5% solution of hydrogen peroxide, buy a bottle from chemists, and dilute it yourself (cheap as chips) syringe it into the offending area and watch it fizz! that always worked a treat for me.

I bought my mare 7 years ago. She had thrush then, and she still has it now. I have tried *everything* to no avail. I now keep it at bay using foot rot spray designed for sheep.

Other than being a nuisence, she has never been lame, and other than when i dig around with a hoof pick it doesnt seem to cause her any pain.

My lad has had it since last winter and I've tried absolutely everything, hydrogen peroxide, wound powder, foot rot stuff, stockholm tar you name it I've tried it - and it still haven't got rid of it!
It was that bad at one point that it went right down to the sensitive frog! However, I've had a slight breakthrough - after chatting to my vet she recommended Pevidine, similar I think to hibiscrub! Very cheap considering it's from the vets and seems to be working! Yipee! my farrier last time said they were looking really good! But unforunately the weather is again wet so just hoping I can keep his frogs as good as they are now if not completely cured!
Hope that helps! I wouldn't worry too much in the grand spectrum of "horsey problems" it's annoying but can be fixed! but it can take a while!!!!
xx
