Had the vet out on Friday as ponio has had thrush that i am struggling to get cleared. He prescribed Povidone (sp?) to dilute with water in a bucket and get said neddy to stand in for 5 mins, then flood the area with Hydrogen Peroxide and then spray with the stuff that is used on sheep with foot rot. Now I'm having problems getting ponio to stand in the bucket - he will do a front foot but then he gets bored and won't do the rest. So i have been picking out his feet, scrubbing with the diluted povidone and then putting on the hyrogen peroxide and then spraying. Do any of you have any tips to clear thrush? Also meant to add i've got the farrier coming on Saturday and i have had a brief conversation with him about it.

I wasn't ever told to tub my horse's feet in the pevidine, I was told to do what you are now doing - use a toothbrush to clean with the pevidine, flush with hydrogen peroxide, then spray terramycin onto the area to dry it out. It worked within a few weeks.

I thought it would be hard to get him to stand still as his is a fidget arse

I'm going to carry on doing what i am currently doing and hope my routine works! Vet is coming back in two weeks to remove tooth particle from other horse so i can get him to take another look then. Must say it doesn't smell as bad as it did but i think i have burnt my nostrils out with the hydrogen peroxide

I use the fairly cheap canvas poultice bags with a velcro fastener for soaking - they're not fully waterproof but stuff soaks through so slowly that it doens't really matter.

Peroxide is pretty nasty cos it attacks any tissue so will attack healthy non-infected tissue as well as the thrushy stuff and it can mean that you get in to a vicious circle cos you're creating tissue that is easier for the thrush to get hold of.

I use a weak solution of borax as a soak once a week and then apply sudocreme into all the nooks and crannies. Works a treat

My chap had thrush in three feet. The farrier was very clear about how to get rid and asked us to pick out a wash thoroughly, dry off and then paint with an iodine solution to disinfect without any tissue damage. Thrush cleared in less than five days.
