I think my horse has thrush-i have never delt with this before but it is smelly, soft and slightly pusy-is there anything you can do apart from keep it dry and clean?
ok thanks-just had a crazy thought-would caneston(you know from all the ads on tele!)the thrush treatment for humans work on horses hooves?I wont try it but it was just a thought!!
there is foot rot sprays for sheep or cattle that I used to use on my other horse for this. Clean foot and then spray butbe warned it stains hands and concrete! good stuff though I got mine through my vet. the other thing I used was to mix a pethidine (sp?) solution and after picking feet out to scrub them with this a couple of times a week.
I have one who is prone to thrush, this is what the vet told me to do:
scrub it out with hibiscrub/water solution, dry it well, then spray in blue or purple spray from the vet (foot rot stuff for sheep and cattle). This is different from the purple spray you can buy from the tack shops, by the way.
A few days of this, and it dried up nicely. You have to look for the 'fizzing' when you put the spray on, once it stops fizzing, then you can stop, but keep an eye on it.
Being consciencious about picking out feet twice a day is really important too.
my horse is prone to it. I tend to wash out with salty water and when the salt water has crystalised i scrub it out with a hoof brush. I then make sure it is fully dry with tea cloth and then put disinfectant and paint it into the hoof. Always works
I use the Keratex Nail hold disinfectant. My horse had thrush about 3 years ago and as I wanted it sorted asap, I tried a few things which actually made it worse and it ended up with a split in the bulb and it went horrible. I found that the best stuff to use was the Keratex above and every now and again, I will put it on now just to keep it at bay. If you decide to use the Peroxide, keep an eye on it as this is what made my horse worse, although a lot of people use it with no ill effects.
I hope that you get it sorted.
my horse is prone as well. now use the oxytetracycline spray once a week (blue antibiotic stuff you get from the vets) and its never come back since.
he had it almost permanantly and i couldn't shift it- tried all the usual stuff- iodine, footrot purple spray, hydrogen peroxide, hibiscrub, athletes foot spray, frog disinfectant and none worked.
