Hi, can anyone give me some tips for managing thrush? One of my horses has a terrible problem that I can't seem to fix. I've tried betadine twice a day like my vet said. This is the first year she has had it and I know we've had a lot of rain, but something doesn't seem right. She comes in at night onto dry surface but I just can't seem to stop it. Any ideas?

Have you had a farrier our to pare the foot? You need to get down to healthy tissue and then I would use iodine soaked swaps to clean right into the cracks. Even go as far as squeezing the swabs into the frog cracks do try and get right in there. The swabs must be done twice a day. Then when foot is dry apply your betadine spray. If you haven’t pared the foot and are just spraying that will be why the spray isn’t working as you aren’t infiltrating to healthier tissue!

Red horse field paste

What is the horse fed? A high sugar diet can have an impact on hoof health.

What are the ground and grazing conditions of the field? What are they bedded on and are they deep littered?

Another vote for red horse - especially if it is really severe. And I know it is old fashioned - but regular use of a stokhlom tar spray once you have it under control.

Thanks so much for your advice. I'll talk to my trimmer about it.
