Last nights storm sat over our house for about an hour. It was 2 yr old Sasha (lurcher)'s first experience of a storm & though she had been tucked up for the night into her crate she barked at every bang.
Is there anything I can do either to de-sensitize her or prepare her for the next one? I know not to make a fuss while she is worrying but I'd like to help her cope next time.

my lurcher has got progressively worse over the years, she is 10 now and I have tried the desensitising tapes, thundershirt,d.a.p.collar, pulling curtains and turning tv up and having a radio on as well upstairs in the room her bed is in.. nothing has worked BUT I tried zylkene capsules and they seem to keep her calmer (although not as calm as I would like) and she will settle down quicker. she has the same reaction to fireworks and last nov 5th I gave her a zylkene about half hour before the village display was to start and she didn't get upset at all. unfortunately I haven't yet managed to give her a zylkene BEFORE the storm starts so she is already stressed and it doesn't seem to work as well.

We totally ignored ours when he reacted to fireworks and he asked to go in his bed. He has since ignored them. Could you do training with her? We did firework desensitising with a puppy the other week, played the same scene from a film, whizz, bangs, whistles, fireworks galore, over and over, not allowing him to have cuddles. Eventually, he relaxed and was easily distracted with a toy. Tricky if it's the middle of the night!

There are tablets available, but I'd rather get them used to it so you don't have to always be ready with pills.

A friend of mine has a "thundershirt" for her dog. It really helps with thunder, firework noises Tec. Not sure what she got it but I' m sure you can Google it.
