Why do you think in the horsey world do people feel the need to over exaggerate about things? Examples; how high they jump, how badly behaved a horse is, how often they ride, how good they are etc etc etc

I have never known the same thing, not to the same extent anyway, in any other 'group'. It's quite bizarre!

I can't quite see where there's any shame in admitting you don't know something or perhaps haven't done something & most importantly have a well mannered, well behaved horse?!

Do you think its possibbly individual perceptions ?
A few fresh bucks to an experienced rider is a broncing nutjob to a really novice one.:p
Jumping 1m is a big jump to a novice but a tripwire to a show jumper:D
I dunno just a thought... Also i think if you feel out of control of a situation it can sometimes seem 10 times worse, so when you tell the story it mabe is exagerated in reality, but in your head is accurate.

I think marydoll makes a very valid point about potentially when feeling out of control it can feel 10 times worse. I think the mroe people tell stories the easier it is to elaborate on things.

Perhaps people think they command more respect if they can do 'better' than another...or do just want to impres..

I certainly have no shame in admitting that I do not like jumping, I can cope with cross poles but that's it, whenever I take on someone else's horse or go to look at one I tell the owner straight that I will not be jumping!

I think you've probably hit the nail on the head with that - what I don;t understand thos is why a novice rider wouldn't just feel comfortable saying that it felt really bad but they accept it probably felt worse than it was?!

It's something that I've thoguth about a few times to be honest and I can still never get my head around it!

The people that I have come across that are like that, are like that about everything else in their lives, it's more down to their individual personality rather than 'horse folk', you get it in every types of sport.

I would rather have well behaved too but perhaps people think if they ride a 'naughty' horse and can cope they are somehow a 'better' rider...

I'm sure it's not just riders - what about anglers and "the one that got away" and golfers who think they could beat Tiger Woods. I could go on...and on... and on...

Best response I've ever heard to this sort of comment was "OMG if I said I had an elephant you'd have a box to put it in"

I agree it's not just horsey people, have you ever heard anyone talking about skiing and going on (and on and on) about how they did a black run?!

I'm much more impressed to see a rider on a well behaved horse it shows they have put time and effort into their horse and the horse having manners
