Hello, I've been searching the old forums but can't seem to find an answer to this one...

Is there anything you can get for horses that acts like Frontline for small pets, ie kills the ticks once they attach? I know there's nothing that will actually stop them attaching in the first place...

I think it's going to be a bad year for ticks as the ponies are already getting several each day. I know how to remove them manually once they're on, but I'm bound to miss some, so a chemical to kill them would surely be best. Does anyone use one?

Ticks, I hate them:eek:

We use Frontline in a spray can. It works for a few weeks. I get it deep into their manes and around their chests and inside the forearms. Any that are attached I get them out with one of those tick remover forks. They're called O-Tom or something like that. I get them from the vets they come in three different sizes; and are good for the mutts as well.

Go to your usual cat and dog vet, and buy a tick remover. £6 something like that, you get a pack of two, large and small, and they work.

*Important*. Follow the instructions!! ;)

Alec.

Tick removers, acaricides such as Frontline spray (I'm sure they do them).
Just whatever you do, don't use vaseline, alcohol or burning as methods! They stress the tick out and make them regurgitate back into the bloodstream and there's a higher chance of disease transmission :)

Hi, thanks! Yes, I can remove them easily enough using the OTom thing. But am looking for something that will kill them off, not just mechanically removing if that makes sense?

Lazybee - you say you use the Frontline spray? I was wondering if that would be OK for horses or if I'd need to use about 10 bottles/horse and it would cost an outrageous amount?! But I suppose if, like you say, you use it in the areas most likely to get the ticks attached?

Midges - ticks - I think the west coast of Scotland has a lot to answer for...:o

Hello again Scot123 you can get Frontline in 1/2 and 1ltr bottles from veterinary suppliers. That's what I use. It's not cheap but it lasts a good while.

What's a cleg???

We get les Mouche plats here in France. They're a virtually indestructible flat fly that look like a flying tick..........and I hate them.

It's probably the same thing that you get. They suck the blood from horses. They're also called horse flies. We get them in the summer time and have to smack the horses to squish them - horrible things.

And, of course, they suck the blood from any unsuspecting human anywhere in the vicinity too!! And yes - also indestructible...

Thanks for the answers - so sounds like Frontline is the way to go. Will try!
