Ok, whilst watching a film tonight, I felt a lump on beau's chest (7mnth old border collie) I pulled it off and dropped it as it (I assumed) was just stuck dirt but when I looked at the area it was red and starting to seep a little bit of blood so I thought SH*T what have i just pulled off?!

Looked where I had dropped the lump and there was a shiny little black tick walking around (I screamed like a big girl! for a vet student, I really dont like bugs!!! hehe)

HOWEVER, through some miracle, by pulling it off by my fingers I managed to pull it out complete, no head left in or anything........ and it was not swollen so I am guessing had not had time to feed particlarly! so I am hopign that it was picked up on todays walk so therefore has not been attached long........

Got in in a shot glass in teh fridge at the moment so I can take it into uni tomorrow to examine it and see what type of tick it is etc! (big geek)

However, does anyone have any recommendations of what I should do now? like frontline him? (he got frontlined in jan, beginnign of) or worm him or anything?! Or just gneeraly body care roudn the area?! its his first tick and I am slightly like ARGH what do I do?! or just leave him?

Thanks

Personally I wouldn't do him with frontline. It is jsut one which has probably been picked up on his walk. I would put a wee bit of savlon on it so it doesn't become infected if you feel you should do something.
If they get ticks, the best thing to get them to release their hold is alcohol, like a wee bit of perfume. Just in case he gets another one.

Have fun with your new pet

Must say, how funny would it be if you called the vet to your yard and she screamed at finding lice in a mane.

Yes, I am a big puff and need to get over my phobia of bugs!!!! worms etc I can handle, but small spidery like things........ ***shudders***
Right ok, so just a little coating of savlon for ex will be fine.
I didnt know if frontlining again would just be over dramatic, but thought Id ask as people on here have obv had more dogs than me! :-)

He is great, and our recall is so much better now, so at least I can get him back to pick the ticks off!!! hehe

Thank you

We took our dog on holiday to the lakes and she was absolutely covered in them after an afternoon in the woods. OH is from America though where they have lots of ticks so he just pulled them off with tweezers and was totally unphased. I know that in upstate NY where he is from the dear ticks carry limes disease which can affect humans and dogs but I am not sure whether or not it is common over here.

I did get a tick myself in the armpit area

(attractive I know!) when working in the states. It was a big wood tick - quite repulsive really!!

yes lime disease is around over here, but not as common in the USA, however the carry loads of icky diseases which can make the dogs, humans and other animals very ill!!! Which is why I am like ARGH!!!!!!!

My friends Dad who is a scientist took a picture of a tick that he removed from himself with an electron microscope. He blew it up into a huge picture and hung it in his office. It was very scary looking that close up - its jaw/fangy things looked like something out of a horror movie!! Have fun analysing it!

I'm with Lucy, I'm a hunting, shooting, fishing kinda gal, I have dressed rabbits and pigeons for the table, hooked worms, regularly hoke gunge out of my dog's ears, been poo picking since I could walk - but ticks make me wretch!

im on a parasitology recap module at the moment, they are minging little creatures!!!!

I can handle, poo, dead creatures, clean anything out of crevices of aniamls etc... blood is fine as well......
but little creepy crawly tick thingys........... **wretches with H_H**

Invest in a tick hook, once you've used one you'll swear by them. And then put the removed tick onto a piece of kitchen roll, fold it over and squash the little b****r - it's immensely satisfying

Well Iv brought the little b****r into the vet school today, so its getting dropped in formalin and the blood drained out of it! (I swear when I saw the blood in her I was like IM GONNA KILL YOU YOU LITTLE **insert word**)
Puppy seems fine which is good

And YES I am a COMPLETE wimp with bugs! hehe btu I will get over them, and I do definetly need to invest in a tick hook.... my problem is Beau's fur is SO long trying to see down to the skin is a mission itself!
