Went to visit my new pooch at the kennels on sunday (can't collect him til today) he was full of ticks, had about half a dozen on him! I didn't notice them on the Wednesday when I first decided I was having him, could it be that they were so small?
SO how do I remove these? I remember many many years ago my pony had one but my YO sorted that.

Kennels ought to do it for you.....
A tick fork is the only way and/or a good dose of Frontline - I'd take pooch to the vet - should not have ticks in the kennels so maybe get checked out before you agree to take this dog? are you sure they're ticks?

Usually get ticks from long grasses etc - so I'd check it out first???

Best way is to get a really good and cheap tick remover from the vets as there is a possibilty of leaving the head in with all the other methods. Has he been Frontlined (flea treatment) as a dose of this will also make the little b******s curl up and die but they still hang on so you still have to remove them. YUK!

Yes Definately ticks, they said they'd get the vet to remove them yest. I've also asked them to bath him for me so they should have got rid of them, I'll be taking him to my vet for a health check in the next few days too.
They think he got them before he was brought in, he was found wandering around so maybe he picked them up then?

If he gets any more, a pasting with nail varnish remover (really soak the area) will soon shift them without you possibly pulling and leaving the heads in; it's something most of us have to hand too!

I can think of better uses for gin!!!!!!

My dog groomer recommends plastering them with vaseline for about 1 hour. Apparently they relinquish their grip pretty easily then.

For the odd largish tick we have a tick remover - like a tweezers, but sprung so they grip on. You have to screw in a certain direction so to remove properly (apparently ticks screw themselves in)

The only downside is that once out they wander off, and even when you squish the back they are still walking. Actually very hard to kill!

If we have an infestation (small ticks or more than a couple) we would use a tick solution from Vet / supermarket (either seems to work well)

asked my vet as the field we keep our horses in seems to be a real tick haven - he gave me a pair of little plastic forks. One for big ticks and one for small ticks.

Simply place fork around tick and then turn anticlock wise. They come off on one piece then you have to kill them by squashing them.

Works a treat for any tick anywhere including humans!

By the way tray and remove ticks asap as apparantly if they are in for more than 12 hours they may pass on lymes disease
