I leant my horse to friends who were short for a trail ride they are doing and he has come home covered in hundereds of ticks (no exageration), I have put some spot on on and sprayed him with my homemade fly spray as I thought it would be soothing (theresa f mixture), but he is really unhappy and not himself is there anything else I can do for him or is it just time.

You want to get them off him. We've got loads of ticks here and where they bite the horse comes up in a puss spot. I don't think they do lasting damage, not sure if horses can get lymes disease. I would phone you vet tomorrow.

Your horse is probably just tired from the ride.

I have read somewhere that to get a tick off, douse it in alcohol. The farrier can also burn them off, this is what our farrier did with a friends horse. You can grab them with them special tweezer things but you must be careful that you get the heads out too.
