Anyone know of how I can prevent the little buggers from getting their grubby little legs in to my horse!!! I know how to remove them, just need any advice on how to keep them away!!! Im feeding him garlic at the mo, which is doing a good job at keeping the flies away, just not ticks...

Thanks!

Carrie

Ticks are 'orrible little bleeders! They climb to the top of grass stalks and then latch on to any warm blooded creature going past. This could mean your ned or you or your dog. I don't know anything that repels them coz it's the body heat they are attracted to. Aside from deep freezing your ned before you ride out (probably not a viable choice!) I think the only advice is try to stay away from areas where you know they lurk. Maybe googling would throw up some more advice ie what times of day they are most active, what areas they like best (eg where there are deer or heathland or gorse etc etc) and then maybe try to work your hacks round that???

I have been told that frontline can be used to stop ticks, But I've never used it, and not sure how you would apply it!( as on dogs/cats its applied to base of neck!!)

I asked the vet about this the other day. Frontline would work, but you would need a lot to treat a horse. Also, if you are washing the horse down regularly after work it wouldn't last very long. My horse has little scabs all over his lower legs, I just wash them once a week with a mild solution of Hibiscrub and pick the scabs off with my fingernails (no wonder I never have any nails left!). Above the knee the ticks seem to be still on him, I soak some cotton wool with methylated spirit and press it against the tick until it loosens its grip, then pull it off with tweezers.
