Ticks

hi, my horse came back home with Ticks last year< i like you was worried first i removed the ticks as soon as poss then called the vet on a monday morning asked him about things that could make horse ill from ticks ,vet said i would be very unlucky if horse got ill, watch out for weight loss a red bulls eye ring around where the tick was and generally an unwell horse < i also got a thing called swicth to put on horse just in case there where anymore i couldnt see and they would fall off . I hope that makes sense , just call your vet if ur really worried and ask for advice xx

Are you in an area with high levels of Borelliosis?

Generally if the ticks are removed within 36 hours of 'biting' the transmission rate is believed to be extremely low, even in areas with high levels of borelliosis, so don't panic! We are in a very 'ticky' area, with known issues with Lymes, but it is actually very rare in horses..

I have only known one horse positively diagnosed with borelliosis (and one person), but it's good to be aware :) The real 'risk' period is May to September as it is usually the young ticks that cause the problems.

Ticks seem to be around in force now. I remove any I find and in bad periods regularly use frontline for dogs on them. My equine vet gave me that to use. Not had a problem with them getting ill from them.
