Moved to Somerset winter last year... now Summer and Ticks!!! bloody everywhere... never ever ever had them on a horse before but the TB's are particularly affected..

Bloody things. Everything I've tried won't keep them off them, new farrier suggested something not licensed for horses... any ideas??

For some reason my horse has been plagued with ticks this year, he is in a field of 3 horses and its only him affected! And they only seem to be attracted to his face!
I was pulling 3-4 baby ones off a day .. ewwwww

Anyway I then started applying frontline sray to his face and it has worked thankfully, keeps the ticks off for about a fortnight before needing to reapply.

I moved to somerset too last winter and ticks are everywhere too!

Never had a prob before. My dogs now have frontline spot on which has worked a treat. I was pulling (properly!) off about 5 a night and now none at all.

Only one of my boys has a problem with them on his muzzle. I think cos he has very thin soft skin on his nose whereas charlie sports cob has skin like a prehistoric reptile! I found some great stuff for parasites in mole avon in axminster and I think its working.

Panther where are you in somerset?

Frontline spray is good for horses and if they ever get field mites in legs it works a treat!

There are loads of deer and thats what the neighbours said. Even my poor bunny got one on his back that left a big hole in him!

So I dabbed some Frontline on to it. It da fallen off by the time I got home from work but has left a bit of a lump there. Blinkin things I hate them. I wonder if there are more because of the mild winter, as we rarely get them and then its usually on the dogs.

WARNING - for those of you in Somerset getting deer ticks please be very aware of Lymes Disease which can infect horses. It can be very quickly treated with antibiotics if picked up quickly enough - symptons are using raised temperature and in humans flu like symptoms. My vet recommended Equest Wormer which apparently is Ivomectin based (ie for cows) but not licensed for horses so cannot advertise as preventative for ticks (think I remember that right - but anyone please feel free to correct me) anyway it does certainly help. Remember to always twist the ticks off anti clockwise also feeding garlic helps to keep them off.

My friend in Dorset's cats were covered in them at the weekend. I've never seen ticks before.

She lives near a river and the grass all around is 6ft high. Would this have a bearing on their high incidence?

Ravenwood: Do you know how long the Equest wormer will repel the lice?

Interestingly enough have seen ticks on my horse for the first time this year - lots of deer around and sheep too. Having discovered two I left him to go home and get some white spirit (fill cap full and hold over tick until it drops off) but found that one had already had its fill and fallen off, leaving a small hole and a bit of a lump. My question is should I be applying anything to this area?
