i've just bought a field in Tidmarsh, and a house in Calcot (just of junct. 12, M4).

I'm looking for a feed merchant, a bedmax shavings supplier, a farrier, a vet, and a friendly farmer to help me with some fencing / hay supplying.
As i don't know the area at all it'd be great if anyone could help me - i'm moving in a month.

any help / advice greatly appreciated.
thanks! x

O'Gormans Newbury for vets. Threshers Barn or Banks Doulton, Newbury for food. Not sure about bedding and Farriers are a bit more difficult to find in this area. You could contact Tidmarsh stud or Blandys Farm, Upper basildon.

Basically go towards Newbury for anything!!!! Much better that Reading!!!

thank you! Tidmarsh stud is about 30 seconds from my field.

also, is there anyone on here that is within hacking distance of tidmarsh as i'll be really grateful for some hacking routes and also some company for the first few go's as my boy - although only 11.2hh - is very nervy in new places!

The best hacking is in upper Basildon, which is quite a way from you. About 3 miles or so. However you can get across to sulham woods which I think is open to horses, but restricted. If you contact Hall Place stables in Tilehurst they may be able to help.

It is funny reading this as I was born and bought up in Tilehurst and from the age of 7 I learnt to ride and spent every hour that god sent helping out at Hall Place Stables, they were great then and had a lot of hacking across their fields which they might let you use? When I was there Sulham was out of bounds to horses due to all the poaching of the ground, but this may well have changed.

Have fun!

I'm based at Cullinghood which is just down the road from you! Would be happy to show you some of the hacking around the area

For farriers I use Luke Silcock who is fab, vets Andrew McGonnal, feed and shavings i get at total equestrian which is a new shop near basildon, its just off the A4 and has lots of good stuff at good prices, plus they deliver which could be handy for you.. and they'll order anything in for you. Threshers barn is also good but is slightly random!

If you need any help just give me a shout

Im up the road as well (at Buckhold Farm). Second Andrew McGonnell for vets, hes fantastic. Luke is also a good farrier, and there are a few others around this area that are pretty good.

We sell feed, shavings, hay and straw here as well. Then Total Equestrian (again as Leg_end said lol) or Bank's (are they still called that Leg_end?)in Hermitage/Curridge are pretty good.

Hacking is fab out our way and you can go for miles in the woods but would need to come up the road a bit to get to us - its really not that far.

Are you in the fields that are on the left of Tidmarsh's concrete road? I think one of the girls on our yard moved from there. If so you are about 10 mins up the road from Cullinghood and then we are a little bit further down the way.

thank you so much for yourhelp!

i have to drive through maidenhatch estate to get to my field, i don't know if you can get in from the other side - i need to do some investigating after i've moved - probably 4-6 wks for me and then another 4 wks or so for the ponio.

thanks again, i've written everything down and your names as well so will be pm'ing you in a few weeks! x

One big vote for Andrew McGonnell, he's been my vet for years now.

I'm a little out of the way to know which farriers cover that area, Robin May might or Karn Herbert might also, but ask down at Tidmarsh for a reccomendation.

There is a fairly new equine supplier called Total Equine that is fairly local (on the A4), being run by Simon from Equestrian world and Jan Cottam, reckon they should be able to get you pretty much all you need.

just read your post and I am based in Newbury...
Cummins and sons are great for feed...have loads of variety and have a great notice board for local events.
They are also paddock maintance.
They might know a local farmer too....
