I am pretty sure that a tie pin is much smaller and unlikely to be strong enough to keep a stock tied. I have just Googled Images for tie pins http://images.google.co.uk/images?h...pin&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi

A stock pin is like a safety pin type arrangement that is strong enough to go through the tough cotton of a proper hunting tie.

Is there a difference between the two?

Very definitely. Always use a plain bar stock pin rather than something fancy with horse-shoes, whips, foxes' heads etc. Then, if you do crash and burn, your gullet will not get skewered by the fancy bits (has been known to happen). Also, only Masters and Hunt Staff wear their pins vertically - everyone else wears them horizontally.
