A quick question re how much this costs please? I would love to hear from anyone who has had this done at Edinburgh uni and how things went for you - looking like my big lad may be Edinburgh bound! :(

Thank you for any replies in advance

I paid £2,100 in Cheshire, but I had the laser hobday which I very much recommend as there is no external hole in the throat, which drips gore for ages and has to be carefully managed. It was worth every penny, my horse was a new animal once it was done. I highly recommend Cedric Chan, who has access to the laser equipment. He has a website and travels to various places to operate on horses, including the last Olympics.

Thank you for your reply - was it £2100 just for the hobday by laser or did that include the tieback as well? Glad to hear that your horse is well - had read some horror stories in a search of previous posts - but no one mentioned recent costs.

Thanks again :)

2k here in northwales, and that was last autumn.
for hobday and tieback.
The wound from the hobday is messy however it was closed up within 2 weeks so not that bad.

I too thoroughly recommend the op, it is very stressful putting a healthy horse under the knife, then the box rest after. however I too have a totally different horse, before the op you could hear him slightest canter, and up hills he was very vocal, now you would not know he ever had a problem.
We have no side effects, I can feed him as normal and he never coughs.

It was very stressful however it seems to have been well worth it.

Hobday and tieback and five day hospital stay were all included in £2100. I took out the staples myself. I agree it was very stressful to choose to anaesthetise a perfectly healthy horse, but it has been the making of him. I have also had no coughs, chokes or infection problems and he eats completely normally.

As a side effect, if your horse is thin, then removing the stress of not being able to breath properly can make it much easier to keep weight on them.

my chap was hobdayed and tiebacked all cost total £1500 paid for by awesome insurance company nfu!!! no side affects, bit of box rest bit of attention after ect obv but a totally different horse after!!!!

many thanks all- interesting about the thin bit _ he is b. difficult to get weight on/ keep weight on.

Glad to hear all your horses did and are doing well xx
