Hello

I posted a few weeks ago asking how much people thought I should pay for my loan horse who I have been offered to buy. I mentioned that his breathing was occasionally noisy and with no real pattern to it.

Well vet came today to check this for me before and after exercise and what a surprise he thinks he has quite likely had a tie back operation! The reason this is a surprise is because he is just a common or garden cob certainly not a race horse or the type of horse that could do high level eventing. The vet said he can't be certain about the tieback because he would expect him to make the noise all the time but he has a very hoarse whinny, coughs just once on his first trot and the vet was sure he could feel scar tissue at his throat.

Now this is not an issue because the vet said he is absolutely fit for my purpose (hacking and riding club stuff) and I have done pretty much everything I will ever want to do with him during my loan with no problem.

His owner and I have discussed a ball park figure for him but not a final price so my question is would this news effect his price?

He is 14, his owners have had him for 4 years and prior to that he was at a trekking centre for 4 years. His owners have been totally honest with me and have actually just moved to my yard so I really don't think they were aware of it (max was their first horse).

The vet said he'd be delighted to scope him for me to see if he was right but not delighted enough to do it for free :)

Well they are worth less if they have had a tie back but really the question is how much is he worth to you ?
Ask the vet if there are in his opinion long term implications because of the tie back make sure you understand it all well then we. You discuss price you include it in the mix and horse that's suits you even with an impairment is not worth losing over a few hundred pounds.

Think of it this way - if he has had the op because he really needed it in then at least you didn't have to pay for it! In the long run it benefits him, it will never bother him and it shoudln't really affect his price to be honest with you.

Thanks both. To be honest it doesn't make any difference to me as he is a fabulous horse and I love him to bits so I am not trying to get the price reduced was just interested and I guess trying to be aware of every eventuality in case for some unknown reason I have to sell him one day (I can't see this happening but you never know what life will throw at you!).

Thanks again

I wouldn't quibble over the price to be honest. I'm sure you're both sensible enough to agree on a fair price for a horse you enjoy and love.

I guess we're not talking thousands here, so the possible devaluation due to the tie back would be negligible.

As for your vets surprise at the procedure, a common or garden cob is just as likely to require a tie back as any other horse that may develop the problem......

My mare has apparently had this operation years before i bought her and she hasnt had any issues regarding it. However, she was advertised a lot cheaper than she would be otherwise because of this. It doesnt affect her and she only makes a noise if you gallop. Her neigh is pretty normal and i wouldnt of known if i hadnt been told. Even the vet wasnt 100% sure that she has had it.

If your happy with the pony and got a good relationship then I'd pay what you think its worth....but just bear in mind that when/if you come to sell him on (you never know if circumstances change) he may not be worth as much as you've paid.

I wouldnt of known and its only because the previous owners told me and sold her cheap because of it, i was offered 3 times as much for her a month after id bought her so if your happy, go for it and pay what your happy with. I dont think that there are any issues once the op is successfully done but i believe that the noise is from where they are tied back 'too much' (may be wrong on that though) x Good luck xx
