Tilden and hock spavin anyone?

I've not had experience of using Tildren but from what I've read its very effective. We used Adequan IM and the effects of this were good. Found this on a different forum

Tildren is a bisphosphonate (like Fosamax for humans) which inhibits bone resorption. It is used to treat arthritis, bone cysts, kissing spine and navicular. Most horses that benefit from joint injections due to arthritis will also benefit from Tildren.

Adequan is polysulfated glycosaminoglycan. It helps reduce pain and inflammation within the joint. It also recourages the joint to produce more hyaluronic acid in the joint fluid--this lubrication helps protect the remaining cartilage. Adequan also blocks the "bad" enzymes that destroy cartilage.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS GENERIC ADEQUAN!

Pentosan has similar anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective properties to Adequan.

Legend is HA. It is a powerful but short lived anti inflammatory--think of it as an "oil change" for the joint.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, I've had a read around the internet and mostly, the results do seem to be quite positive. I'm just praying it works for my lady too.

My friends horse was injected with Tildren (I think) regularly for a while. It didn't really work and his hocks had only partially fused so were very painful. In May, he had ethanol injections as last chance saloon (vet explained it as it would either make him better or worse, in which case he'd need to be PTS) Happy to report that the ethanol injections worked and he is in work (hacking, schooling and competing western) He is turned out for as long as possible every day and the owner believes that this has helped. Might be worth asking your vet about as another option? Good luck.

Mine has spavin and has had tildren a couple of times. Once before I got him on loan and 2 years after that after he had been off for front feet lameness he started to have problems again so had steroid injections and tildren. I was obsessive about his rehab and still am about keeping him in constant work. He came back better than ever so it was definitely worth it.
He is looking a bit stiff again, once I establish that it isn't due to trauma he may have it again. He is now 22.
I also use turmeric, pepper, linseed and premier flex.
Good luck with your mare.

Thanks, I'm aware that it's still very new as a drug for spavin, and it may or may not work, I will ask about ethanol injections next time were back at the vets. A friend has also recommended synequin (for after I've given Tildren a chance to work/not work). I don't want anything else to potentially affect what were seeing. She's on turmeric, pepper and linseed oil already, has been for about 3 years now. I'm keeping that up, just not adding in extras yet.

I'm lucky in that she can live out most of the year, only coming in when the weather is really bad, so constantly keeps on the move. Next weekend if I have the time I will take her for a walk out inhand, she's only allowed straight lines at a walk atm, as supposed to be resting for 4-5 weeks. The vet has cleared me to ride her also, but she was only infused this week so I want to give her the best chance possible by starting off inhand without adding my weight to the mix.
