My boy is having both hocks injected and a Tildren drip today.

Anyone else had both done at once? Did you see an immediate improvement?

I'm hoping I will, but maybe expecting too much.

Also going to buy some Riaflex today and start him on that.

Hate to pee on your bonfire but I found they weren't of that much benefit to my horse compared with fusing the hocks using ethanol (alcohol) which kills the nerves in the hocks immediately. The horse can go straight out, and start ridden work the next day, building up over a period of a week. Best thing I did for my horse in my opinion anyway.

I expect the Tildren helped to start with, even though he had to have three lots, and obviously the steroid injections helped too but fusion using ethanol is relatively new and has been reported as being very good in trials. If you are having his done at the surgery it might be worth discussing ethanol with them first and seeing if you can have this done. Its around £300 for both hocks but that's it then, no top ups, no danger of laminits, etc.

I believe it can take up to 18 months to two years for the hocks to fuse, but the horse feels no pain after the injections.

Oooo that's good :) he jogged out to the lorry full of himself when I picked him up. Can start working him on Tuesday! He only has very slight DJD in left hock so am hoping for a good outcome.

Our old horse had his hocks injected with Tildren, had to work him quite hard but did see an improvement.

Hope your horse has good prognosis :)

they will do an xray at the surgery and if there is any likely hood of leakage between all 4 hock bones then they will not do the ethanol method as this would leave the horse paralysed, but unfortunately they can only tell you this when he is booked in for the op. but at least go as far as you can with either method.

Thanks :) I will see how he is after this treatment. Cant ride him til Tuesday and only in walk for 10 days. I have to have wedge shoes put on his back feet too, to see if it helps.

Tildren is given as an intravenous infusion though - it slows down the production of osteoclasts to prevent bone loss.
Would have been something else that they injected into the hocks.

I'm following this thread with great interest. My boy has had Tilfdren, and we are considering hock injections once he comes back into work in (hopefully) January

Sorry I meant he had the Tildren for his hocks, it was injected via drip in his neck, think it was about an hour long process. Vet said horses can sometimes colic afterwards ( think this is something to do with the sedative they give) but our boy was ok
