Hi - I'm new here - but I wanted to ask about Tildren.

My horse was treated with it four weeks ago (for hock issues). He had a week off and is now back into work.

The good news is that he seems much less stiff through his back and hind legs, but really what I want to know is whether this will actually last for any real length of time ... ie is he "cured" of his arthritic hock problems - or will it return with a vengeance at some point in the not-too-distant future?

Any info or experiences appreciated.

My horse had tildren in june/july and i have been told that the effects last for about 8 months....

Dont know about the hocks... if the joints have fused the pain should have been sorted as if there is no movement there is no pain (in theory)... were they medicated as well, as this may be the reason for the respite from the pain.

Its a fairly new drug so i am just waiting till he goes stiff again (he had it for hocks also)

Can only talk about my experience with my old boy. Tildren has been brilliant. He gets his once a year; can really tell the difference after 3 weeks. Was a bit late for the last one and he was still doing great.( But not a reference as he is tough, always willing and anything but a sissy.)
Also never stiff. His problem is not arthritis so can't really compare with your horse. I wish you luck though as when used appropriately, Tildren seems to work wonders !

firstly interesting that your vet advised work so quickly! Dan had forever off before recommencing ridden work after being treated BUT he was lame both infront and behind at the time of treatment.

Dan was treated a year ago and is still sounder than he was before. Two friend's horses also had the same treatment. One about 4 years ago and he has been retreated with tildren once and is still sound. The other about 2 years ago and hunting twice a week and still sound.

I think a lot depends on how you treat the horse in addition to the treatment. For example possible corrective shoeing but that is more applicable for front limb lameness caused by navicular and the like.

I have retired Dan from showjumping and limit any work on hard ground and hopefully although he may well be needed to be treated again in years to come I currently have a sound happy horse rather than what was a very lame unhappy one!

.

I'm quite surprised that it seems to have worked (cynical? me? never!) on my horse as he was really quite stiff and lame.

Merlinsquest -yes, he was treated with steroid in the worst hock about five or six weeks before the tildren, but ultimately that didn't seem to have a great deal of effect. He had some time off after the injection, and then came back into work. He initially seemed OK, but then became all stiff again and I had to get back in touch with the vet.

santa145 - yes, he was back into work fairly quickly - vet said following the treatment, to give him two days of box rest, followed by a week of field rest and then back to work (I've been pretty gentle about it!). Vet has also advised special shoeing behind (erm, can't remember the name) - the shoes have sort of squared off toes (if that makes sense) to ease the breakover (farrier said hind feet don't 'breakover' but put the required shoes on anyway).

Thanks again for your replies - I'm feeling a bit cheered up now!
