Well my girl was fed on course at endurance ride (bascially at every vet gate so every 20 - 25 miles) so I'm not so strict on feeding. Basically as soon as her sweat has cooled I'll let her eat but I would never give her a massive feed (though I would never give any horse a massive feed!)
I know some horse don't cope so well with being fed after hard work so I'm cautious if I don't know the horse and would give them 30 minutes before giving them a small feed.
If I was in a rush I'd ask someone else to do it or come back down, no point in risking a horse health due to lack of time.
No strict time for me as such, depends on how sweaty horse is and if they're blowing or not. Even if I do a fast hack, I'll likely spend the last mile or two walking and slow trotting and by the time I'm back, he's normally cooled off.
It also depends on the time of year, summer I'll kick him out in the field with no feed and he'll start eating grass, and in winter I'll do his stable etc and then feed him, in which case its prob about 20mins
I feed when I have got tack off, washed off, rugged as necessary etc Mine both have a fibre diet so it would be chaff and sugar beet and maybe a handful of nuts - if stabled they would probably start picking at their hay if they wanted it and always a big bucket of fresh water for them. In the summer they go straight back out in their fields and start grazing.
Probably form when they fed mainly straights - so not readily digestible for horses.
Or it could be similar to the myth about not going swimming for at least an hour after you have eaten - I swam competitively for years and it would have meant we either never ate or never swam!!
Like everything in moderation and something fibre based will be best as it maintains gut function (one of mine has ulcers/gastric syndrome so is important he has something to chew on).
Well Ed has alfa a oil and PP so I always think its the same, he goes into his stable and has his first course of hay anyway so once he's got his gut moving I hope that feeding fibre 30mins after shouldnt be too much of a shock.
er food
LOL I didn't used to like going in the bath after I'd eaten.
