Time critical: should i rug?

J is clipped (see pic) but woolley everywhere else.

He is hot to touch unclipped areas and warm elsewhere.

Its raining and will be all day but temperature is set to get to 16 degrees.

He had run around yesterday when I got him in thankfully unrugged as it was 17 degrees so he wasn't dripping in sweat.

I think he will be better unrugged but wanted thoughts.

I've got so indecisive lately.

Does he have anywhere to shelter? I’d lean towards unrugged too but mine has a l/w on today because it’s supposed to be raining all day.

If you don't live on an exposed mountain he'll be fine as he is.

I think he'll be more comfortable unrugged if it's mild and there's no biting wind in the rain.
Mostly stopped to make a comment though, because he's such a handsome horse.

Un rugged. My un clipped retiree was slightly sweaty last night so I left her rug off and although it has rained a lot in the night she is perfectly happy being wet this morning.

My cob is similarly clipped & naked. Its hard ignoring other liveries comments,but in my opinion its too warm to rug a hairy native.
Over rugging is more of a welfare issue than under rugging.

As a rule of thumb, I was always told to add about 10 degrees to the actual temperature to get the temperature the horse is feeling. Obviously I would consider a rain sheet if out in heavy rain with no shelter, but apart from that leave off as long as possible if they have coat over top line as he does.
He looks gorgeous and has plenty of coat left for current dry conditions.

Thanks all. He has been naked all week I was just a bit "worried" about the rain, but I think he will be fine. I don't think he will melt anyway!

Mine had a similiar clip in September (just with whole neck off) and he's lived out unrugged - even through the rain. He just stands under a tree if he doesn't want to get wet ?

For mine, it's not yet got cold enough to worry about the rain.

Late to the party but a vote for unrugged. My cob type has the same clip and is unrugged, she is always hot to touch too. 12 to 15 degrees is also not cold. Also an up vote for what a handsome boy he is

Mine is unclipped and out naked today. As you say it is raining but not cold/windy. Saying that even when it is raining, cold and windy mine still doesn’t get a rug ?

I don't tend to rug unless under 10 and my boy has the same clip - or I'll use a 50g if raining and in doubt really

Oh wow thank you. I've really been trying to keep an eye on his weight and his food intake. Due to rehabbing we cant up workload really but I didn't think he looked too bad

I was tempted to leave Topaz un-rugged despite a full clip as she had sweated up in her medium the other morning ( I think she must have been running about it was less than 10 degrees, she is back in her 50g now!), but that picture is why didn't ? she gets muddy enough with a rug on!
