Hi,

I am hoping to buy/loan a horse in the near future. I have had lots of previous experience, however this was when I was younger. I was not in a position financially to have a horse but now I am, however, would like to know how others manage regards fitting in work and your horse? For example, do people find it better to work nights and then you can have sufficent time to see to your horse morning and evening? I currently work 12 hour shifts but only 3 shifts one week and 2 the next. This might mean very early starts and late finishes or, some assistance from the livery yard. The only thing with that whilst helpful, is the thought of having to put my trust in someone else to carry out the job ( I have high standards ...lol!) but also, I am buying the horse so I can enjoy the mucking out, the grooming etc myself...that's part of the fun! Anyway, all ideas welcome....thanks !!

Hello

Could you loan a horse for a bit to see how you could fit the horse in to your work life? I work during the day, 5 days a week, 37 hours. generally I work 8-4pm Monday - Thursday and 8-1pm Friday. Horse is currently on day turnout, so I go up around 6am, do all of my jobs (mucking out etc.) and then ride, then head off to work, come back around 4.20pm and bring in and finish off and poo pick. In summer it works well, winter I have to juggle things for daylight (i.e. YO brings in as I cant get there before dark, I ride in the morning but go to work later, usually 9.30amish).

Its tiring, but you do fit it in. It might be worth looking at possible part livery where you could have the horse on livery on the days that you are working which would then leave you to do the jobs when you are off?

Very exciting though :)

Thank you Surbie and Dyllymoo for your helpful coments and suggestions. I think what ever job you do it can be difficult but manageble if you can be organised. I think I am warming to the idea of going on nights as this seems to be a better option. 12 hours shifts are awful I find and thats where the problem lies.
