Can anyone recommend a plug in timer to use with a Haygain. I have just ordered one (Haygain) but will be worried that I might forget to turn it off after the hour.

You need to know what the wattage of the steamer is before you go shopping for a plug in timer. There are plenty of timers out there but some of them are only suitable for a few lights or appliances with a low watage & not for the heavy wattage that a steamer would have. Haygain should be able to advise you of the wattage each iof their steamers has.

I just use a normal timer that you can buy from any DIY store. Set it for the time to come on and when to turn off and off you go

Please find out what the wattage is for the Haygain.....do not "use a normal timer that you can buy from any DIY store", that is irresponsible. If the timer cannot handle the high wattage that a Haygain would have as it has a heating element then it would be dangerous & could cause a fire!.

For something that is being used in an environment that is a high fire risk, along with the fact it is so easy to get distracted when running a yard I am shocked that it does not have a built in timer, it is a relatively expensive product to build in an important safety feature and allow it to be left unsupervised seems to be an oversight to say the least.
I would want to be able to put my hay in and get on with my other jobs or go out and maybe get delayed and not worry about it, I know there is a cut out switch but a simple timer would be peace of mind and make it more viable.

Don't know which model you have bought but the instruction booklet will have the wattage in. Maplin stock timers for 3000w.

Bit surprised that there isn't a timer on the unit.

I am pleased I posted as I was just about to buy a timer from my local diy shop. I have emailed Haygain and asked what they recommend. I am buying the one which holds a whole bale and agree that for the price it should have a built in timer.

Can't remember make or model but I use a "countdown" timer for my haygain (rather than a time on/ time off). I've used it for past 2 years with no issue. Before I got the timer I used either the timer on my phone or set the timer on my watch to remind me.

The reason haygain do not have a timer facility is that the unit has to reach a certain temperature to be effective. The length of time taken to reach this temperature has many variables (temp of water being used, temp of unit, amount of hay used, whether loose hay or packed hay, outside temp etc etc). For the half bale haygain which I have they recommend minimum of 50 minutes but ONLY if it's reached temperature. In the winter or if I'm using tight bales, Ill often have to increase this by 5-10 minutes to reach temperature.

Look what happened to my Haygain HG600 steamer plug when I plugged it into a CE approved BS5733 countdown timer rated for a 3.12KW load at 13A 240V. The Timer plug is only 2months old bought from Amazon, but noticed it was getting quite hot to touch. I wouldn’t reccomend using one. Luckily, it didn’t start a fire!
