My horse is at vets Ive only had him 10 days :( . Hes messed around with another horse and caught his back leg on electric fencing. Its cut to bone very deep and about 5 inches long. Its been flushed out under ga and as he was caught doing it vet was on yard after hour. Hes had surgery and can be stitched and has drainage and will be in horspital til tues. Just wondering how long a injury like this takes to heal if there are no compli.cations. We don't think joint has been compromised although swabs have been taken.
He was absolute saint to handle and loaded straight on trailer .:o
Does anyone else have experience of similar injuries.Ive been told manuka honey is fabulous but will ask vet .

Hey, look for circuit dancer on here (my sister) our tb got caught in the fence and slashed his RH lower leg down to cannon bone. I put a picture up on her thread and have been meaning to put up a post two months pic.

It's healing very well but its at least 6-8months box rest. We have been using this new dressing that the surgeon at our practice recommends http://www.equimedag.co.uk/Wound-Dressing-Mini-Roll/View-all-products.html

I think that's really helped his healing. We have brought most of his dressings ourselves as its a very expensive injury for for insurance claims.
will try to remember to put up the pic later on.

Pm either of us if you want to talk.

Thanks ill have a look.Just spoke to vet she thinks 2 months as his stitches are holding well and hes being model patient :DJust waiting for joint swab results so fingers crossed .

Mine tried to cut his foot off with electric fence rope (the thin stuff). He was at the vets having daily cleaning and dressing changes for two weeks, then two months box rest with dressing changes etc at home. Fortunately it was early winter and he loves being molly coddled in a stable, and I am lucky that I could use two adjacent ones - a bedroom and a sitting room :D Then start small amounts of work - I turned him out in the school for an hour at a time, and the lazy lump doesn't do any more than he needed to so he just mooched - and build from there. He is 100% now, a few years later.
About a month in ( December)

By March it was still about 1/2 inch wide, now, years later it is a 2 or 3 mm scar, but his wasn't stitched, it was too likely to keep pulling the stitches out

oh ouch  Im bit squeamish normally but you have to deal with these things when it happens. Glad to hear hes much better. My horse is lucky enough to have his stitched which will help ,it was caught immediately after injury. Not looking forward to box rest but Ive done it before and will probably have use of two stables.Vet says hes being good patient which will help ,just waiting for results on swab from the joint but wound looks clean.Such shame its beginning of summer and we now have grass :o

My old mare degloved her leg from hock to fetlock, severing tendons at the same time. She was treated at home and it took 6 months to heal enough for her to go out again.
Never did find what she did it on.

If the wound is clean, manuka isn't going to help much. It's brilliant for clearing up manky wounds, but if there is no infection present, you may as well save your money.
