Last time I went riding (the fourth time I've ridden since I started again after a 5 year break) a new lady was there pottering round the school with me, and the instructor came over to me and said "stay out of her way and let her meander around where she likes, because she's nowhere near as confident as you". It's weird, but that little comment has had me on top of the world ever since - I've always been a nervous rider, ever since I first sat on a pony, and I didn't think that would ever change. I always assumed I'd be nervous and novicey forever - but hearing that made me realise how much progress I'm making and that one day I will be a brave, competent rider which I never thought was possible!

What little tiny things have happened to you that had a massive effect on you? Like an offhand comment or a small gesture that stays with you for ages afterwards.

oh yay! you must LOOK very confident on the outside- which is half the battle

It is nice isn't it! I got back on after 25 years and was saying to my daughters instructor that I felt like a sack of potatoes and I must look awful and my position all wrong, and she said no actually I didn't look too bad at all.
