Tipping at restaurants

[ QUOTE ]
please remind me WHY someone who doesn't tip is 'tight arsed' or such and such? These people are getting paid (and if all is legal and above board it will be at least minimum wage) and it's not hard to be polite and efficient, the customer is already paying for the meal, why pay extra?

Absolutely!! People make out that waiting on is a nightmare job- it really isn't. Everyone else is expected to do their job properly without tips, I don't see why waiting staff should be any different

I always tip at restaurants if the service is good, if its not OH and I don't.

What I find mortifying though is when we go out with MIL and she ALWAYS tips, even if the service is terrible! She tips everyone, taxi's, hairdresser, anyone really, probably the postman too!

I never tip. You can all call me all the names you like for it! I don't get a tip from my customers at work (sales rep), I wouldn't tip someone in a shop, I wouldn't tip the person behind the til in the supermarket so why should I tip in a restaurant? Chances are I am already paying a small fortune to eat somewhere so why should I subsidise the wages of the waitresses and bar staff because the restaurant won't pay decent wages?

And before I get jumped on, I have been both a bar maid and a waitress (though only the latter for about a month as I hated it so went back to bar work!).

It amazes me when I go out with friends and they want to tip when the service received is poor...why reward poor service or sub-standard food? If I've been using the same hair dresser for a while I might tip her at Xmas but that's it. My friend runs a beauty salon so I can't tip her when I go, it's bad etiquette to tip the salon manager apparently.

My ex boyfriend was obsessive about tipping in restaurants. Even if the food was awful and the service terrible, he would still insist on leaving a 10% tip. WHY??!!

Because that is my view on it and that is that. We are all entitled to our opinions and have the freedom to express it and don't necessarily have to explain the reason behind our opinions. I mean you wouldn't have to justify yourself every time you saw someone being a complete 'tosspot' or else you thought they were ugly to look at would you?

I don't. No one tips me when I bend over backwards to get in that particular jacket someone desperatly needed for the birthday they've forgotton about, so why should I tip someone else? Just like the majority of wait-staff, I'm on minimum wage. So I see no need to.
