Tips for a long thick mane

My boy DID have a long lovely mane when i bought him -

however due to an unfortunate sticky bur incident.... I had to cut out some of his mane - he has also rubbed his forelock a bit and has now become a bit shorter - does aqnyone have any tips on getting it growing thick and healthy again?

What a pretty, pretty man.

Personally, I'd pull it nice and short (but then I can't abide long manes or tails). He would look sooo smart!
 
You think?...now i wanted to do that but my dad said he'd hang meif i pulled it short lol hes always been a gypsy cob typ of man

What a lovely gypsy cob - much sort after in that colour.

Ok - go to Tailgator.co.uk and buy:

Megatek, survivor detangler and mane and tail bags.

With a clipper sharp comb very carefully take the ends off so there are no thin wispy ends - every year at the end of the show season I take about 6" off my lad's mane, tail and forelock. As he grows a good inch a month, it is back ready for the next season.

Don't pull it, and if it is just a section that is rubbed then just tidy up but don't try to take the mane too short to match.

Make sure the hair is clean and now mix megatek with water 50 - 50 and at least every other day rub a little into the roots, as well as encouraging thick fast hair growth you will get strong nice nails. You can also spray it onto the feather to preserve them.

Put a blob of the survivor detangler on your hand and gently comb all the hair through with your fingers and then with a detangler wide tooth comb from Avon go over it again so there are no tangles.

Plait up the hair - you will need two plaits on the tail - a top plait from about half way down the dock and a second under plait from the bottom of the dock. Don't make the plaits too tight at the roots.

Pop the lot into the bags. Forget for two weeks but continue to use the megatek.

Take hair out, remove plaits, use a bit of survivor, carefully comb out - some hair will come out but this is normal hair loss. Plait and rebag.

This is Stinky at 3 1/2 - following week I took 20" off his mane to make his topline look far more chunky - bit of a shock and now two years later it is almost grown back as long, despite my annual 6" hair cut for him.

In winter - cover his legs in pig oil and sulphur - PM me if you want the very long PM I do on having hairy horses legs kept in healthy show condition.
