When you are first cantering under saddle I would get an experienced horse to lead you around the school. Remember you may need to exagerate your leg going behind the girth. I would also ask the horse for canter with your voice at the same time. If your horse starts running in trot, bring him back before asking. As soon as they canter praise them and do not worry about being on the correct leg at this stage. If your horse breaks back to trot early on again do not worry as they will be unbalanced and find this new task difficult
Sometimes a young horse finds it easier to canter in a field if he is safe to do so. If not, then have a lead in the school and ask for canter towards the gate/home.You should also have him moving from the voice on the lunge so that you can back your leg aids up with the voice. It can get a little bouncy so a neck strap might help!
Thank you, Walk and Trot have been easy to establish and canter in a straight line has been achived hacking with good results, was concerned in the school really, going to do another cuple of weeks walk trot then try canter again.
He is a gem with his training so dont think this will be awful, will def use a neck strap though
If the cantering in straight lines out hacking is going well wait until he knows which aids mean canter, and try using your voice too whilst out hacking so he understands when you say canter and put your leg back he canters. In theory it should be reletively easy to then do it in the school but a lead might make it easier.
Flash strap between D rings works quite well as a handle!
