Anyone got any good tips for getting brushes (as in grooming type) clean?
Hovis is the biggest muck lark in the world and i usually have to give him at least a 5 minute flick over both morning and night to prevent people thinking I found him tethered at the side of a road somewhere.
As a result his brushes get filthy really quickly and for some reason hubby doesn't like my "I'll just get a new one!!" idea! Can i put them in something to get them clean again?

I always use washing up liquid for mine, and use two brushes against each other if you get my meaning, do it outside otherwise the kitchen ends up with splashes everywhere.

Baby shampoo works well too.

Or a tiny bit of washing powder for the really stubborn, mucky ones. Make sure you rinse them thoroughly with cold water if you use washing powder though.

wash them in hibbiescrub (sp) dilated in water not only does it clean but it disinfects to!

make sure parents/oh is out and stick em in the washing machine on a cold wash (otherwise the bristles soften and curl)

I soak mine in warm-hot water with some fairy liquid added (or nothing at all) for 10 minutes. I then retrieve each one and use a metal curry comb to run through them to get any loose hair off/get all the water into the roots of the brush. I hose off with cold water. Then shake off and leave to dry in a sunny place.
Don't do this with wooden backed brushes as it ruins them.
I think I may have heard top yards putting brushes in a material bag (to stop all the hair clogging the machine) and putting through washing machine, presumably on a cool cycle. Don't quote me on that though.

As Mickey said, don't do it to wooden back brushes. If they are wooden back then just dip the bristles in warm water & fairy liquid. Don't immerse the whole brush because the wood back will split & break.

It's usually to hand on the yard, and at work. It does a good job too

I flick all the brushes out, then leave them to dry in the sun.

Ditto Nickiportia, warm water and some horse shamps works for me too, is it the grease in your horses coat of the actual mud...perhaps different soils (sandy/clay etc) have an effect on how easy the dirt comes of your brushes perhaps...who knows!

I usually leave mine soaking in water and hibiscrub for a few days then hose them off. I once looked after a friend's horse for two weeks and decided to clean everything for her. She didn't have spare brushes so I soaked them in warm water - when I came back to them there was a fully formed maggot in the dandy brush

I stick mine in the washing machine! You can buy proper bags to put them in so you don't get your machine clogged with hair or use an old pillowcase or 2 & knot it at the top - should do the same job!

I use soda crysals dissolved in boiling water. Just dip the bristles in and the grease is gone. Fab stuff. quick and cheap too.
