Tips for housetraining with rescue lurcher

Hi - we have had our lurcher for a week now (not long in anyone's books). She's approx 4 yo stray who was been in the rescue centre for 3 months - history prior to that is anyone's guess.

She is developing into a lovely dog - growing in confidence, happy with our other older lurcher, happy with the cat, eating well, walking on the lead well and not bad with her recall training (certainly better than any of the other lurchers we have ever had at such an early stage).

She is given two good walks a day and let into the garden at least once per hour in between the walks when she will wee. However she will then wee in the house sometimes within just a few minutes of coming in from the garden/walk. I presume this is marking her territory or similar but it's not something we have ever had with any of our other rescues so I am a little unsure of the best way to proceed. I am of course aware that it is very early days but I am keen to start as we mean to go on, and to stop this from becoming a habit.

Any advice would be gratefully received!
 
Is she urinating infront of you? or are you finding the urine patches? does she hoold at night/when left? which room predominantly or none in particular, floor surface (hard/carpet)?
Also unlikely but a urine sample to vet would not go a miss.
 
Not in front of us, she leaves the room and either wees on the hard floor in the dining room or the kitchen. Although, earlier this evening it was the mat by the front door.

I did wonder about a urine sample - what's the best method for this with a female? I have run around the garden in the early morning in a nightgown and rubber gloves with our old boy, but there's less room to get a pot in with the girl!
 
Don't follow her:D instead take her to some grass on her lead (slackish) lead and have a pot to catch it in, lids from jars are pretty good as wide enough to cover the flow and shallow enough to get under a low dipper:D, be inconspicuous, bend down beside her and pop dish under, but she needs to be on lead, if you follow her around off lead you wont get a result:p

At home, keep her in the same room as you at all times during the toilet training process, allowing her to roam from room to room unsupervised does not allow you to stop the behaviour and guide her out doors, only when she is proving to be clean (and she must be to be doing it out of sight) then let her have a little more free reign, so when/if she squats infront of you, disturb the behaviour, a vocal "ahh ahh come on out" and lead her out to (designated wee area)..... the garden and praise near the end of the motion. Its all about correcting/guiding (routine) but very important to keep her in your sights.
Is she clea when left alone and you return home/ where does she sleep?
 
Thank you Cayla for your tips including the lid idea.

She is clean overnight (sleeps in the sitting room) and is clean during the day if left alone, it is just when we are at home and she leaves one room to wee somewhere else. That element of control makes me think that it isn't an infection but we will get her tested just to be sure.

I get them in anything handy to be honest, its the way you go about it thats important, lots of people thing they will get it following the dog around.this just makes the dog look at you like you are a (nut job) and naff off from you, you def need the dog on a lead and take it on grass for 1st wee of the morning, and bend down near the dog quick and no fuss (heck you may can some pish on ya hand) but it does not bother me.
The other day I needed a urine sample from a westi and a greyhound (both foster carers) said they could not get them.........I used 2 peanut butter lids, took westi 1st from car straight to grass on lead (1 second later) she squatted I got plenty urine in my lid:D (chucked her back in car):D
Did the exact same with greyhound, took a second (pittle in lid) back in car (job done both dogs in 1 minute. :D

Fingers crossed other wise could be habit, when out give her plenty of opportunity to go on grass and whilst you sort this problem as you return home keep her in you sights:)
