tips for ponies that won't hack alone

I found a pelham helped me with my pony too, but if you don't know how to attach one, then I would suggest you have a couple of lessons using one before hacking out. The curb rein is extremely useful but I only use it when absolutely necessary - it's usually very loose when I'm riding - and it can do a lot of damage in the wrong hands.

May even help to get someone experience to try riding her out. I got a friend who's an instructor to ride my boy out a few times and he did try it on with her, but she was much better equipped than I to sort it out.

If your horse does not behave on the roads - don't take it on the roads as you are asking for trouble.

I would arrange to take him away somewhere where you can ride off road each day for for 2 weeks starting in small circular hacks both ways round and then extending them. Keep him at a walk all the time and try to ride him each day for 7 hours. See how he responds being off the road but being hacked out.

Do you have to ride on the road where you are? If you have a handy field close by your best bet is to start taking her in there initially, even for 5 minutes!

How do you react when she turns and heads for home, what do you do to deal with it?

It sounds to me that rather than changing her bit and hoping that will work, that you need some decent schooling so that you can learn to anticipate what your horse is about to do, and then deal with it appropriately. It's so difficult to give advice without seeing you in action so to speak...
