Hey all :)

Has anyone got any tips to remove my ponys winter coat? It's like half winter coat half summer looks odd haha but I want to take him out showing soon but can't take him anywhere looking like he is!!!

I've been grooming him with one of those shedding blades, I've got a grooming block urrrrm I could give him a bath I suppose but any other ideas?

Many thanks :D

My place is a mass of hair, clouds of it everywhere. Horses are shedding as they move.

I clipped two small ponies this morning because their coats just weren't coming off even when it is 27C, and will be in the 30's tomorrow. Poor beggars were suffering.

Shedding blade and rubber curry is working for my mare.

I have the same problem! My boy was feeling quite warm this morning because he is hanging onto his winter coat so tomorrow evening I will be attacking it with a rubber curry comb!!

A furminator will be your best friend. I use the dog sized one for the body and the cat sized one for very gently doing my mare's forehead and legs. Her winter coat is nearly out now and she was complimented at a show last weekend on her lovely summer coat.

Might take the dogs' furminator up tomorrow. I spent an hour using the shedding blade today, the entire yard was covered and it took me ages to sweep  I had to stop grooming eventually because it just wasn't stopping coming off. :p

Furminators are great but I found that they do sometimes cut the tips off the hair.

I use a hacksaw blade - extremely cheap, bendy and great for getting the hair out.

A good bath also gets the hair moving especially if you use the plastic curry with the hose. I have one that actually attaches to the hose - wonderful brush

Next year give horse a full clip late January then you won't even have to worry about the hair - the summer coat will grow through as the winter falls out.

 It's -20C and below here in January! My horses would love me for that :D

I was clipping show horses last week because our weather has been so messed up that nothing was shedding fast enough.

I love my Furminator, it works equally well on short and long hair. But be sure to buy a genuine one, the cheap imitations are not nearly as good. They can cut the hair and leave it rough looking. A genuine one will not do that, but you are looking to pay around £30 for a large dog one, or £40 for a horse one. I have a large dog one and it is perfectly big enough to do a horse!

I also bought a Lincoln comb, their version of a furminator. It works but isn't nearly as good as a furminator but it one third of the price. So you get what you pay for.

Heavens - where are you? You are making me shiver just thinking of that temperature. :D

Ontario, the warm part :D Heading into the 30's today so we are told, that's more your sort of temp isn't it?

This is one of the Kentucky Mountain horses I clipped the other day, at a clinic on Saturday, he looked like a moth eaten blanket before I got hold of him, elbow grease wasn't going to do the job fast enough for him. Lovely boy, I wanted to steal him.

Lovely horse and I thought maybe you were in that neck of the woods. Glad I live in New Zealand

My mare HATES the furminator! Can't get anywhere close to her with it. Worked a treat on our gelding, mare is very sensitive. Elbow grease only real solution for her :(

My youngster is finally starting to shine in patches, but I'm still doing a round of mud buster, then furminator, then rubber curry an hour every other day!

My next horse is going to have a fine, fine coat!!! lol!
