I have recently bought some lovely mark todd long boots for competing in. Has anybody any tips for softening them? Been wearing them around the house and they are starting to give arount the ankle but still very stiff and hard to fasten as so stiff.

Any ides appreciated as got competiton in about 10 days and my old boots have given up on me x

Laura! You genius! Or are you having a laugh? (Have strange images of putting potatoes in my boots :D) I saved for 18 MONTHS to buy my boots and am struggling to get them to soften and drop enough to be comfy around the back of my knee. Might have to try that :D

Wear thick socks get them wet and stomp through a few fields - oh and ride in them. When waiting for my boots to drop I put in some heel risers made by mountain horse. They're just thick wedges of foam that fit inside the heels.:)

Sorry, I'm hijacking, but monikirk, do you find when you put heel raisers in your foot is sort of pushed up into the top of the foot bit and stops it dropping? Not sure if that made any sense :p

My boots are yet to leave the house  I'm scared of getting them muddy :o

Literally just a potato, straight out of the bag, no messing :D

Has always worked on mine, bit of an old wives tale, passed on from my Granddad from his army boots.

Well stops your boots rubbing behind your knee - then as you wear them they soften and crease by the ankle and drop almost an inch - then take out riser and they're fine. Years ago had some boots made for me and had a wedge of card inserted for about a month before they were comfortable to ride in.

Thanks for those suggestions the potatoes will be coming out tonight. How long do u need to do it for? Going to start riding in them tommorow to begin wearing them in x

an old army trick is to P!$$ into them & no i kid you not, urine is great for softening leather. have to say though ive never been brave enough to try but my Pop (grandad) regually did to his harnesses & they were always lovley & supple & i never saw even a hint of rubbing on any of his workhorses no matter how hard a task they had been but to.
