I am having huge problems keeping my hands still. Horse is a baby and I need to get a consistant contact going but am really struggling to keep my hands still, I watched a video the other day and they jiggle about and my rein contact is really intermittent - no wonder the poor boy is confused. I need to guide him as he isn't consistent yet. :(

Am going to try riding with a whip across my hands but does anyone have any tips bar splinting the flipping things with sticks and a tail bandage!!!

Thank you

:)

Attach a flash between the front 'D' rings on your saddle , hold with your little fingers when riding. Hope this makes sense.

I bit like the above, my instructor tied a lead rein around my horses' neck and I had to hold that with my little finger to keep my hands still - worked a treat!

Stand against a wall, lean your hands against the wall in the position they would be in if you were riding.... Then 'rise' up down up down bending your knees. Work on not moving your hands one bit from wall. Feel how your hands stay still while body moves, and observe the opening and closing of the elbow joint as you rise /sit. You will then start to get the feel of independent hands.

Try on horse. Start with putting your hands on saddle and not moving them, and slowly bring them up.

You could try a pair of reins with elastic inserts eg Balance International Eezy reins or Carl Hesters fantastic elastics.
Also, watch the video and look at exactly what movement your hands are making - are they circling clockwise for instance - and then when you are riding think about doing the opposite movement - it's always easier to move differently than to try and stay still.

Exactly what TJP said, my friend does this for her little girl whilst showing – she ties a piece of cotton to the d rings and she just hooks her little finger underneath to keep them down.
