Ok so I have entered our beautifull Showmaker filly for her first in hand show at Woodbridge so only approx 6 weeks to go, she is lead in and out every day and well handled so running her out wont be a problem, or so I thought until I took her into a side field and she has decided its all a big game leaping and careering all over the place, I need suggestions on some prep for this as we obviously want to stay in one piece, I am firm but calm with her and to date her manners have been fantastic but she is getting a very big girl now and there is a lot her her to contain, I am hoping the company of others will calm her down as she was impeccable at her branding, has anyone done this before suggestions please.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

Are there some other people you could enlist to stage a "fake class", just get her used to behaving with a group of horses.

Apart from practicing and always always wearing a hard hat, keeping her at a safe distance at your side (so she doesnt strike you if she goes up) I'd get to the show nice and early so you can walk her off a bit, also using a extra long lead rope/lunge rein to practice with, then your leather show lead need to be a long one too.

You may find she'll take it all in her stride once she's settled down.

Good Luck

Find a nice little local show in the next six weeks and just take her to walk around . See what its about. Also not everybody will be eyes on you first time she's out and about. That saves some red faces!!!
Also wear gloves! and keep smiling!

(ps before somebody calls me a troll i am Tuppence88 but I lost my password so have this account now)

A firm hand and a firm tone with her , Plenty of practise .

Carry a schooling whip with you whilst you practise just to encourage her to move away from you if she gets too close, She needs to respect your space .

Most of the judges will tolerate abit of bouncing about during the parade around as they are still babies . So I wouldnt worry too much . Although it is better if you can get her to walk off nicely and behave

. But judges will understand .

Echo kenzo ... Get to the show nice and early so you can settle her , Take her for short walks .

Try and relax yourself and enjoy it .

My baby is now 3 years old so this year so will be our last inhand at balmoral .

Good luck

How old is she? A mild straight bar bit will give you more control over her without being too harsh. Or you could use a chain over her nose. It might be too much, though, if she's a sensitive type.

Do you carry a crop? Sometimes, a quick swat on the behind can remind them that you are the boss.

Ah now this was another question I had she will be exactly 1 year old, are they expected to be bitted ( mildly) at this age) ?? I was intending on just using her filly slip ( bridle) if it still fits .

Since posting have been back outside with her and had a practice again had a job keeping up with the mahoosive trot but an improvement on this morning, yes a quick flick with the rope behind did help, and now being more assertive.

Things looking better already.
