Hi - we are proud new owners of a 5 year old haflinger and are taking him to a local show in a few weeks so my daughters can enter him in a few jumping classes. I would be so grateful on any tips on how to do his mane. It's very long and flowing at th moment and I haven't plaited for over 20 years. Should I pull his mane and plait or leave it as it is? ThankYou!

Haflingers are not something I have a huge amount of experience with but I believe they are shown unplaited - a quick look at the pics on the Haflinger society website would appear to confirm that.

If you want to keep his mane out of the way for jumping then a running plait may be an option - though I know many of the purists aren't keen!

ThankYou, I have been practising both but have to admit I am finding it difficult, my fingers aren't as deft as they used to be!

My daughter finds standing on a small stool helps her with a running plait, she can get on top of it (if that makes sense) and it stays close to his neck. It's just about practice really x
