My newn horse will be arriving this week, any tips on how to ensure that he will not get colic from over heating on journey and the best stratagies to enable him to recover in the best possible way. Thanks very much

Why would he overheat?? i travelled my old horse from surrey to wales, took 7 hours, and apart from one quick leg stretch at a service station he travelled up the whole way just fine!

don't over rug him and make sure there is adequate ventilation and he won't overheat. i always feel they are better a bit too cold than too warm! 6hrs isn't ferociously long...we regularly travel alot longer and they cope fine. will he be in a lorry or trailer?? either way its best there is some bedding in so that he is encouraged to poo. alot of them won't pee in trailer or lorry and if they do will only do it when its stopped. make sure he has plenty of water before loading and two pitstops along the way. a bran mash on arrival should see him happy and keep his system moving and if iwere you i would het some coligone for him. the syringes are great for travelling and the supplement will keep his gut right as he settle's in to his new home.

I meant coligone, I don't think the extra glass of wine to celebrate his arrival has helped my powers of oncentration!

ok if he's arriving on a 9 horse i assume its a transport company and they will ahve him sorted re temp etc!! coligone is a supplement made by H Brashaws:

PM H's Mum on here for more info...its great stuff that she developed!!!
whats horse like, where's he coming from etc? and congrats on getting him!!

Ive travelled horses 10 hours before with no problems so I wouldnt worry. If he's being transported then there's not much you can do during transit! (I would have advised lots of very wet speedi-beet as its brilliant to get them to drink and also excellent fibre). Otherwise, Id ask that he got a full haynet for the journey (although some transporters dont...) and double check he'll be offered water at regular intervals. Otherwise, ask that he doesnt have a rug on or if hes clipped, then maybe just a fleece. Its better if hes a bit chilly than too hot and with the chance of 8 other horses being onboard, he'll probably be cosy enough!

When he gets home, Id put him in a nice cosy large stable with horses nearby, a huge heap of hay and give him a sloppy feed of speedi / sugar beet with electrolytes added.

Mine arrived after just over 8 hours on a pro transport with others. He had a little walk to stretch his legs on arrival and then a nice big deep bed, plenty of water and a big pile of hay. After a drink and a bit of food all he wanted to do was to sleep.

Don't give him a grain feed. Encourage him to drink - and check with transporter how much he drank en route. Colic is normally caused by insufficient fluids. If you offer grain feed - this will increase chances. However 6 hours is not a very long journey so he should be fine. Agree with amage - far better not to overheat when travelling. people over rugging is a very common problem.

6 hours with a transport company,i would not worry too much, just let him walk around a bit,one of my horses came over from Holland and that took hours plus a ferry ride and she was just like normal, just a bit tired and desperate for a wee since she does not wee on a lorry
