Tips on stopping manes rubbing with neck covers

no idea I'm afraid-my MW and HW rugs are both combos, so by about mid November my poor gelding has only 2/3 of the mane he had in sept :(

My pony lives in combo rugs or stretchy hoods. I use show conditioner sprayed on generously or oils in the mane, i also let it get some air for at least part of the day

Also i keep the mane clean and wipe the inside of the neck on combo rugs with baby wipes to keep those clean too

Pony has a lovely mane :)

From my experience, it is the heat and weight of the neck rugs that cause the mane to fall out. The heat opens the pores, and the weight and friction finishes the job! It's always easier to pull a mane after they've been worked because they are warm, so if you are rugging their neck in a mw/hw neck rug, it will keep them plenty warm enough to open those pores!

I only use rugs with removable neck rugs, so unless it's raining, my horses don't have filled synthetic neck rugs on. Instead, they have either a polar fleece or cotton hood. If you bring your horse in, that's a great opportunity to take the neck rug off. If It's freezing, then something like a polar fleece neck rug will help keep them warm, without the weight of a filled synthetic.

I also wash the mane once a week, and the polar fleece/cotton hoods get washed as well.

Some horse get it some don't. And if they do it's due to the heat created then friction , nothing will stop it, so don't waste money on all these hoods they don't work.

Only way to stop it - no neck rug

Good point. My mar was fully clipped when I got her and her mane had been pulled short, she was in a med/heavy rug and I was always surprised how toasty she was

Mine (full clipped) was roasting in a no neck MW this morning, despite the frost on the ground. He's naked at the moment, so he and his mate can groom each other!

I only use the neck cover when it's dire and my mare's neck is fully clipped - she never feels cold without it and it only goes on if I can't bothered to listen to the faffy horse mollycoddlers any more.
