My native gelding is going to be stepping up a gear showing wise this summer, and I wanted tips on how you get a bay coat to look its absolute best. Feed wise we're v restricted as he lives off a couple of blades of grass a week, but product wise etc would love your hints.

Good feeding, lycra undersheets, velvet as a body duster, elbow grease and a shine spray with silicon in. Shine comes from the inside so also add oil to his diet

Nothing.

Mine are fed TopSpec and Alfa A, plus groomed daily with good quality brushes and my bay shines and my grey sparkles.

From the inside out is far better than any grooming product. You could add a small amount of vegetable oil to his feed, or linseed cubes. F has a handful of these in his feed (3 ish times a week) and he shines all year round.

Having asked the same question a few weeks ago, i now have some proven results. A warm shower, spray with showsheen whilst still damp then put on hoody and rugs till dry. leave conditioner in mane and tails if they are frizzy then polish with good brush or velvet at the show. my bay looks stunning his coat gleams he looks like melted chocolate at the minute even though we are inbetween summer and winter coats.

I think the main difference from our past routine and present is indeed the warm shower. He is fed alpha a oil aswell

If a horse is well on the inside it will show on the oustide, so you dont have to feed him more just make sure he's getting the best from what he's eating, a healthy gut equeals healthy feet, coat and so on so I'd make sure that he is wormed correctly and bob him a yakult in his feed, 4 times a week or some pink powered.

Garlic graduals, this great for the immune system and helps with the flys during summer.

Seaweed helps the condition of the skin, I used this along with biotin.

Micronized Linseed is rich in omega and oils is a great way to improve condition and a shiny coat but it can also help with weight gain so you might have to be careful with this one.

Super Codlivine is very good, its a all round vit/min supplement but with added cod liver oil, I've used this in the past and would recommend it.

As for added help, lots of elbow grease grooming the horse helps to stimulate the natural oils in the coat and removed the dust/scurf, but for a real shine (if you want to cheat) I love Lincoln Total Groom, used once a week really puts a lovely gleam to coat and brings out the dirt..which then sticks to the inside of your rug, like a horse bath but without the water, but be prepared to then wash your rug afterwards!

Decent food and proper grooming. Elbow grease will beat showshine or whatever hands down. It also doesn't make your tack all slippery. I've known judges mark down horses which have shine products on them.

I agree with the inside out!

I always think a simple balancer is all that really needs to be added to feed most of the time, so long as they get all the necessary nutrients good coat condition is a given.

But my tip is seaweed...fab stuff, works as a cheap balancer too
