I've had my boy 6 years now and he goes through phases of being a real pain in the rear end to tie up. During a quick brush and tack up he can sometimes pull back 3 or 4 times and it drives me mad! If I tack him up in his stable he doesnt move an inch the whole time. At the ripe old age of 23 you would think he would know better! He will stand tied to the lorry/trailer forever and wont budge so why can't he do it at home!?

Any ideas on why he might be doing it or tips to stop him doing would be gratefully recieved.

my mare does this, I do not know why she does this I just assume she may move realise there is pressure and react to it, luckily she is well behaved and will stand on the yard without being tied up..

I have been tying her up very loosely and if she shows any signs of resistance I undo it so that she learns that it is not scary I will gradually increase this any how long she is tied up for..

Silly horses!

the elastic pul back tie tab things have helped min as they just stretch then pop so they don't panic - I think they were only 3 quid each

They are stupid! I don't get why mine doesn't do it when he is tied to the lorry?! Maybe he just knows he is tied up there and thats that. He doesn't always do it though, I thought he had stopped doing it till a little while ago but he has started again.

If he's pulling back and snapping twine but doesn't seem scared or panicked, id tie him with 2 ropes and two loops of twine so he learns that even if he pulls back he's not loose. I work with one who pulls just for fun and this stopped him as it took the game out of it.

My 5yo breaks the strings for fun. If you do tie to the metal ring he doest bother at all (I only tie him to the ring when he is supervised).

Agree with the two ropes and strings solution. We have a youngster who does this, and he gets bored if he can't break loose and gives up. However the crafty beggar watches to see if you forget and just tie him to one! Just make sure the strings are not too thick/strong as it then negates the safety aspect.
