My Springer was due to be vaccinated for DHP this month, last vaccinated 3 years ago. He had a titre test last week and has come back with the highest result on 3 diseases (distemper, hepatitis and canine parvovirus) meaning he does not need a DHP vaccine this year.

Does anyone on here not vaccinate for Lepto? or do you prefer to vaccinate for it?

All of ours have had lepto 4 for the last few years, they work throughout the shooting season and do love getting in bogs, drinking dirty water etc which I understand is the risk.

Just worried about 'over vaccination' which is why I titre tested this year and am questioning Leptospirosis vaccine.

Thanks in advance.

No titre test for it (I think due to how quickly they can go from having immunity to being at risk for this particular disease so testing yearly just wouldn’t cut it is what I got told years ago?) so it’s usually recommended to vaccinate even if not giving any other vaccine.

Every dog we’ve ever diagnosed with it where I work has died from it / been pts due to treatment not working or dog already being in organ failure before diagnosis made although some are reported as surviving in journal articles so obviously sometimes it can be treated if picked up early enough (I think it’s the realising that’s what’s going on quick enough that can present the problem) It’s a really serious disease that can be zoonotic so an infected dog is a potential risk to anyone around them until about 2 days into treatment (at which point the risk level reduces)

I think the only time I wouldn’t advise vaccinating for it would big dog has had a previous serious vaccine reaction to that vaccine or if had an illness that made vaccination in general contraindicated

I would always recommend it in working dogs, so many rats on shoots around feeder/feed rides and farms in general. I know firsthand of 3 cases of lepto in unvaccinated/lapsed vaccine gundogs this season alone, only one survived

Slightly digressing. Mine are done in April when their yearly check up and other booster if due is given. Would it be worth leaving ur until nearer the start of the shooting season? Saying that we have plenty of rats around home, we back onto a cattle shed in next doors yard.

I line up/walk mine so everyone ends up due in August. Personal preference

I just took 2 of my spaniels to Jolleys pet clinic for their Lepto vaccinations today.

I’ve never been before, but my usual vet now charge £72 per dog and Jolley charge £25 per dog, money is a bit of a struggle currently so thought it was a saving worth doing.

Weird set up, tiny room at the back of the shop, open door, anyone can listen/dogs walking past. The young vet had no clue what a titre test was.. once I explained (and that he had full immunity) she then went on to say he’s still due DHP. *eye roll*

I had to show their history which I had on my phone emails. Anyway, she did a basic health check and vaccinated them both with L2 (which is great and £40 for both dogs) but they don’t do an online record its a a vaccination card which they’ve given me.

It concerns me it’s not an online record but on a piece of card, in terms of proving they’ve been vaccinated/if insurance ever requested it although hopefully I’m over thinking it.
