If you had money to comfortably afford full livery, would you?

If i did have more money than i do i would still have mine on diy,but probably a yard which had nicer/modern facilitys.it wouldnt bother me traveling further as id have extra money for fuel.so yes i would stay diy bcause i love doing my horse everyday.

No, I don't think I would. My boy spent a year on Part (5 day) livery when I did my MSc (not by choice - no DIY yards nearby) and was miserable - although that had more to do with the particular yard rules i.e. minimal turnout, tiny amount of bedding, overenthusiastic and unnecessary clipping/trimming, lack of forage and overrugging!

But no, even if I was at a lovely yard (actually am at the moment) I would rather be the one who handles my horse and makes decisions for him :) I am happy pottering around on the ground doing yard chores.

i suppose i am a DIY'er, i keep my boy in a field that my friend owns and with her horses, we don't have any facilities at the moment as she has just sold an old field to by this one. i love going up there every day to see my boy and wouldn't go a day without seeing him. so answering your question i would stay as a DIY'er.

I would probably have someone feed and turn Affy out on a morning so i dont have to travel to work scraping mud off my pants or picking hay from my hair, but I would still want to muck out, groom, and fix feeds because thats what I own a horse for, that daily interaction - plus it keeps the weight off!

No. :D

I had my mare on Part Livery for a short time and it didn't suit me or her. I love the 'looking after' part just as much as riding and I would miss it.

Depends how much money I had! If I won the lottery (not possible, never bought a ticket) I'd give up work and look after her myself full-time. And get a few more too.:)

If I had to keep my job, I'd move her somewhere with better facilies, still DIY most of the time but with an arrangement where I coud pay for full livery just on the days when I'm on a 24 hour shift. At present I have to recruit friends and family members, and it's a worry.

No matter how much money I would NEVER go part or full livery again! I would use the occasional services but I have a horse and enjoy caring for him.

What Geraldine said. 99% of the time I want to do them myself twice a day but occasionally it would be very helpful to let someone else take a shift! My DIY is totally diy and no assistance if that makes sense so it is me myself and I doing them!

Nope - I love looking after him as much as I love riding. Actually probably more! I'm lucky tho as morning feeds and turnout come in my DIY package and everyone helps each other out so only one visit per day needed.

My friend and I had this conversation the other day as we have just had a new livery come to out yard who has her horse on full livery including exercise and literally comes down once a week and even wants her horse tacked up for her on occasion! I personally wouldn't I like the graft of looking after my girl it makes me appreciate her I am on assisted DIY (lowest choice at yard) and I found it really hard to get used to not having to go twice a day however now I like the flexibility and I have even gone part livery on the one day a week I go to the office so don't have to go to yard at all!

I am on a DIY yard & am happy. I enjoy the handling& pampering just as much as the riding. Me & my mum do it between us in the week she does the mornings before work then I do the afternoon as it is always dark by the time she finishes. It's is helpful as we do have a lady on the yard who runs it & if people get stuck she will help for a small fee, like turning out she charges £2 so always helpful to have around :)

Nope. I love doing my horse. Spending time with them is how you bond. I also like being in full control of her routine/feeding etc etc.

However that's not to say I wouldn't employ someone to muck out and poo pick! A horse wouldn't care who did that ;)

Its all the silly little things for me like,

Her calling to me when she sees me.
Making her feed n she knows when im walking round the corner with it,she whickers.
Making her bed just right.
Knowing how much hay is in her net at night to last.

And the silliest- that ive put the kick bolt on the door lol,i have a thing about that.

We have our horses at home, but if we won the lottery we would have a full time groom and a handyman to do all the repair jobs around the yard and land that keep my hubby working flat out on his days off! On the groom's days off I would do the horses. I'd still be down at the yard a lot and decide how things were done, but I would have more of a life to do other things now and again! It would also mean that I would have more riding time.

I used to have to have my horse on full/part livery (whatever you want to call it!) because I work away from home. On my days off the livery yard were delighted that I'd often muck my own out and sweep the yard etc with them.

Does her horse neigh happily at her when she does turn up?

Probably not.

'neigh happily?' I always assume mine is 'shouting' something along the lines of 'hurry the hell up woman, why should I be standing around waiting for you to feed me/bring me in/turn me out (edit to taste ;) ) HURRY UP I SAID!! I haven't got all day.

:D

You're probably right my Babel fish needs replacing. :p

It is.

I always think its cupboard love when they do that. Cute, but they don't mean it!

Lol...hubby and I get nickered at regardless of the time of year so we are not always 'bringers of food'. :)

To answer your question, no I wouldn't, not for all the tea in China. I haven't ridden for ages (horses too young, op, now pregnant) but I love being with them and it gets me outdoors in the worst of the weather. I would however happily pay someone to poo pick for me! :)

I would like to not have to go up in the morning and then get changed in a cold barn before work (trying to time it so I'm not half naked when the blokes that work at the yard come in to collect rugs and headcollars).

However, I'm a control freak and I don't think I'd be able to let go. Even when I had my lad on part livery for 3 weeks (yard did him mon-fri) I made all of his haynets up in the evening and left them for the yard. I like to know what he's eating, how warm/cold he is, how many hours of turnout/ how many poos! I also haven't yet found anyone who mucks out his bed that way I like, even though it's not always immaculate when I've finished.

So ideally, if I had enough money for full livery, I'd put it towards extra rent / mortgage and have him at home! (might need a lottery win as well!).

As above - I now have mine at home and it's the best, I get to make all the decisions. But it's hard work doing the maintenance (usually it's me, OH says they are my horses so my job to keep fenced in etc!). So my ideal would be to pay someone to do all the s**t that I don't have time/cba to do any more. Like keeping my muck heap forked up and trampled down. And painting the stables. and endlessly fixing broken things.

I had a horse on full livery only once, and I hated it. I still ended up going up every day, as they never gave him enough hay. Even if I left the office at 10.30pm, I'd still have to go to see him, knowing he'd have finished his hay by about 4.30. And I went on holiday for 3 weeks and when I came home I burst into tears as he was standing in a wet, rank bed and had lost heaps of weight.

I'm sure there are GOOD full livery yards, but I have yet to hear of them in my area certainly.

Nope not a chance, i could probably do it the now but choose to look after them myself, i have 1 close friend who if i was stuck id ask to bring in or put out, only because i know their way of working with horses and trust them.
My name is marydoll and i am a CONTROL FREAK :D:D

I would like 'assisted' as there are times when I visit family(up North), and times when OH would like me to go diving with him.
