Where did you find them? :p

My friend has land, about 30 acres free and wants a project pony, but she has a limited budget.

She won't loan due to a bad experience in the past, and has a maximum of £150 to spend on the horse. She's experienced, and isnt bothered about age or behaviroal problems.

There are however a few conditions, she wants something heavy, gypsy cobor something similar. 14 - 15hh. Max of £150.

Is this possible? And where should she look?

Thankyouuu :)

I've suggested that to her, but she wants to own because she's covinced if she loans from a person, or a rescue centre they'l get taken back once she has done all the work. I wish she would though, she has so much to offer a rescue pony but sadly she won't . :(

a couple of months ago there were cobs advertised for £100 but i can't remember where it was or anything else. they are out there but it would also mean she would have to be willing to travel or take a chance at the sales.

well, i hope she isn't intending on keeping a horse on its own on 30 acres!!!

A`rescue woukd be her best bet to be honest. There are tonnes of horses out there in need of good homes and a rescue will not ask for them back, they will check up on them (generally annually). Ok, so she'll never technically own the horse but it'll be as god as and she'll be safe in the knowledge that god forbid something should happen to her or she lost the land or couldn't financially look after the horse any longer, the charity would take it back and rehome it again for her.

i really think that'd be her best option and if there are no other horses on the land at present I would really urge her to look at getting at least 2 horses/horse and a companion.

Sorry, forgot to add she should look on the RSPCA, Bluecross, redwings, WHW websites

Dont under stand why someone with so much land has such a small budget?Have seen very cheap weanlings for sale on the free sites.

Haha, no. Th 30 acres is split up in 6 fields, that are rotated. At the moment Blade and another pony have the fields to them selves, and are currently in a 6 acre field, whilst the winter ones rest. So once she gets her pony there will be three of them, if not more (I think she intending on doing grass livery) :)

and she would travel :)

With an extremely tight budget and wanting a popular breed, I suggest the market/sales. However, wanting a heavier horse (gypsy/cob) I think the horse would go more for meat money tbh

IMO there are plenty out there!! she may have to stretch her budget too £400 and there are thousands! Pre loved. Horse Mart and Sales are the best places to start

teasle - In all honesty she doesn't want to spend that much on a horse, she would rather try and "rescue" one, without giving too much money to the person who bred him/her. Its her choice, not mine, I'm just trying to help her as there are pony's out there in need, when there are 30 acres of land pretty much empty :)

I will tell her you suggested the sales, I know the nearest auction to is isnt holidng one until May, so she will probably have to travel :)

What are her intentions for it? If she's looking for one to buy, work on an sell on then she wouldn't want to look at rescues. If she is looking for one to keep then I think this would be her best option with that tiny budget. She could probably pick up a very young animal for that but a coloured cob type in general for £150? I can't see it happening!

I went to York sales last year, and ponies were going for nothing. The gypsy cob types were the ones that were going for the most. More like £1500.

The coloured cobs.gypsy type are VERY popular and extremely expensive. Ive NEVER seen one for 150.Even a foal is over 400.
What does she want it for? ie buy, train and sell for profit???????

She is NOT going to get a gypsy cob for peanuts. I paid 1000 for a unbroken gcob neally 6 years afo and he is now neally 9. I saw a foal recenly selling for 600.

I know of a 4yr old full 17hh Tb free to good home lol. Not quite what she wants :) I got a 16 yr old Newfie 14.1 for not much more than that but I had him on loan first. There are plenty of horses out there but its a combination of good luck and patience to get a cheap one like that!

I am sorry but if she can only afford £150 how can she afford to care for a horse? Even a field kept one requires shoeing/ insurance/ vaccinations/ worming. When thinking of buying a horse, think and then think again "can I afford it?"

A horse is NEVER free.

I was wondering that. If her budget is this tight she shouldn't be getting a horse surely? As for getting a "rescue" because she wants something cheap, rescues can be the very horses that cost you more money. What's her monthly budget for keeping the horse once she's got it?

Word of mouth - thats how you get offered horses. I have been given, and offered, no end of horses and ponies. The gorgeous horse I have now I paid £5 for and that was just to make her legally mine.

Racing stables/point 2 point yards will often pass off a horse especially if you hunt.

If she wants a project then tell her to get down to the sales, no end of youngsters going for meat money unfortunately :( During the autumn the Exmoor ponies that are brought down off the common will sell for as little as £50 for a colt weanling. She just needs to keep her ear to the ground - good luck.

:( there are also older free to good homes unbroken exmoors online for the enthusiast. Sad but true.

Decent riding horses always make good money, cobs make good money she could buy a youngster but keep it for a couple of years geld if needs feed farrier and worm and its no cheaper.

Problem horses in need of tlc or tbs are cheap or youngsters as i said, my dad races so we have tbs the amount you would spend in feed if looking after properly would buy you a horse alone.

I f you want a cheap horse you need time or experience and it costs you in the long run if not all at once for purchase price, a lame or ill horse or wild unhandled horse costs as much for farrier feed stabling beding rent or livery and that is just a start .

You need insurance monthly costs maybe your friend should consider a share and see how she gets on.

My friend is trying to rehome a 10 year old appy mare [ridable] I think I remember reading.....and ideally her 27 year old companion best mate if anyone would have her too!
