I have posted a bit before about my broken back- now I have just finished college, I applied for uni to do Equine Dentistry but I didnt get in.

at the moment Im working as a waitress, but I cant do that for ever because im on an obsene amount of pain killers to get through a shift.

So what do you guys do for a job, at the moment im verging on having to go on disability untill something gets done because I cant justify the amount of painkillers, its so much that I puke blood- verging on getting a stomach ulcer and would really like some career advice :D

I understand, I did L1 and had several ops and I'm so sorry that you are in so much pain.

I think that you need to go to a pain clinic, talk to your GP and get him to refer you. You can't continue the way things are.

I can't help you career wise, sorry. If you are having to take so many painkillers that it is making you ill, shouldn't you be getting your consultant to sort something out, or is it still because it is broken that you are getting the pain and will it get better with time? I'm not one for encouraging benefits (my work involves catching benefit fraudsters), but it might be the best thing for you. It can't be good for you to be taking all those painkillers that it makes you vomit blood!

Thankyou! Ive got an appointment at the end of september ref MRI scans; but this has taken 2 years, so not expecting any miracles, Physio is on going and I also hate benefits, because I do have a job so they would only be a last resort.

the only qualifications /work expo I have is horsie related so I dont know how to transfer into something less physical

I hate to be the mean one here but if you are on that amount of pain killers i doubt very much if you would cope with being an equine dentist. My dentist is a very fit, healthy guys and to see him struggle with a horse that wont stand still or wont hold his own head up, not a job i would do with a bad back.
I would agree get your back sorted first and then see what jobs you can do. good luck, i really hope you get something sorted :)

It's fab that your MRI is finally nearly happening (what a long wait though!). I still think that you should go to your GP and get your pain meds reviewed. A pain clinic can also help you with other forms of pain control eg, TENS.

Go and push for some help and don't let them take two years over it!

No offence taken- but thanks, I did think about that but thought I could cope with it, but recently it has shown me that I really cant!!

Ive just been given Codeine painkillers, and hopefully sorting out a longerterm thing with the consultant, I have heard about TENS on here, but the doctors havent bought that up so I will suggest it :)

Sorry to hear how much pain you are in. I've lived with similar for years after a bad riding accident. had to go back to a non horsey/physical job as my back couldn't stand the pressure of beding constantly.

Could you retrain for something horse related but more academic such as nutrition?

TENs is okay, but for me doesn't replace the heavy duty pain relief I sometimes still need. Have you had long acting injections? I used them for several years after the accident- via the hospital - and that helped me to get back in the gym and get my strength back.

yeah the doctor suggested the injection, but they havent given anything solid- so hopefully they will have a better idea about what would suit at the app soon :)

Nutrition sounds like a good idea, I will look into that one!! thankyou ! :D

Sorry you are in such pain, I know what it's like.... I was in a car accident 4 years ago and am still undergoing treatment for my back / shoulder... I have been to every bloody pain clinic going / had 3 x MRI scans ( at £1200 a go ) X rays galore, every pain killer known to man, accupuncture, physio, osteopath, chiroparactor (sp) Tens machine, Muscle machine...The list continues. I continued working for a while, but it was just too difficult and allthough I never wanted to go on benifit money, my doctors made me realise that if I didn't slow down now and let it heal ( or try to ) it'll only get worse... Disability benifit is not means tested, so if you are entitled to it, which I would think you would ne with a broken back, you are still able to work as much as you feel you can, and your salary does not come into it. I think it is incapacity that means you can't work...

I don't know if you have been down this route, but it might be worth asking your doc about being seen at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, they have the best physio team in the country and have made the world of difference to me, they normally have you as an in-patient for a few weeks, and hit you hard with the physio, excercises to strenghten you etc, and they have the best team of back / shoulder / neck specialists you could find... About £30k later I managed to get refered to them on the NHS and I can't praise them enough. It may not be an option for you atall ( Don't really know ) but it's defo worth asking your doctor about it if it was something you may consider. I was told I would never ride again a few years ago, and after seeing these specialists for the last 18 months, I can now ride for about 15 mins 3-4 times a week : ) .... That is a HUGE thing to me!!

I have now realised that I have been waffling on for ages, and my reply has next to no relevance to your post, and has maybe 50 typos ... Sorry!

Hope someone else is a little more useful on the career front : )

xx

EgerdenFarmStud thankyou!! Ive had 2 MRI's because they did the first one wrong and got all the wrong pictures or what ever they call them :) had countless X Rays Doctors the most neccesary but annoying people on earth!!

Can I ask why you had to pay for all your treatment? I had my MRI scans paid under the NHS?

its really good to know about Stanmore- Will definatly look into that!! It sounds ideal- I have had all the different types of Physio, but the most AMAZING chiropractor in sheffield has helped so much, thanks for all the information, arming me with alot of things to say for the consultant!! :)

ETS - congrats on the riding- Ive just found some one to have my horse so thats looking a long way in the future for me at the moment!! xx

I have had to pay for mine as I am suing the lady that drove into me at 50 mph ( I was stationary in a que of traffic ) We went private first of all because we thought it was just a bad case of whiplash at first, we just thought we'd pay and get it all over and done with in a matter of a couple of months, now obviously that isn't the case... I will get all my medical bills paid back, it's just a question of when - we've run out of money now : ( Thank god Stanmore is on the NHS... It really is an amazing place!

If there is anything else you'd like to ask, feel free to PM me...

Hope you get things sorted!

xx
