sorry for the rant to all those who understand my plight and thank you all for bothering to read this very long post i look forward to hearing everyones opinion on this issue as im sure there are so many of you out there who feel the same! and to add insult to injury someone earlier i sore posted about us FAT people watching tv all day well i ahvnt watched tv or an epesode of easternders since dirty den the first time round so updates on that also needed hahahahahahaha

Because you are covering a topic that's been done a thousand times, from all sides and you have a very confrontational style of writing.

Hello and welcome to the forum by the way.

Oh, and no one is coming you your yard or yelling at you. In case you don't know how a forum works i will explain. If you are offended by something, stop reading it. Exit the thread. Read a fluffy bunny thread.

Sorry, but I found that really hard to read. :(
My mum told me that Iam fat today - its common really and I can take it, but I do know Iam quite fit, and the 'fat' bit doesn't make sense. Hey Ho.

Please don't think this rude, but I got the general gist of your post, but couldn't take enough of it in to comment as the sentence went on for a whole paragraph, and I kept getting lost!! I basically understand where you're coming from - being overweight myself and also often getting dismayed by the lack of thought that some people have for other people's feelings on this forum. Being polite doesn't make it a "fluffy bunny" forum does it! Being rude makes it a depressing forum.

Im a larger rider too and if i dont like the comments i see i just ignore them TBH, just as i would in "real life". Narrow minded, rude people are not worth the effort arguing with and as long as you have an appropriately sized horse that is capable of carrying you, and you are not causing it any problems with your weight and riding style, then frankly its no ones business anyway.

I will admit i rarely post pics of me riding (anywhere, not just on this forum) as im very self conscious of my weight and i always seem to look fatter in riding pics than i do in normal pics! But the pics i have posted on here have only ever had very kind, positive comments :)

I dont read the "am i too fat for my horse" threads. If you're posting that then clearly you think you're borderline so speak to your vet about it, dont look for sympathy on a forum!

ETA: Sorry if i missed the intended point of your post, like the others i found your post quite hard to read so gave up after the first few lines. Punctuation is a wonderful thing!

thanks honey 08 no no not rude i no my punctuation is appaling one of the problems when your dyslexic im afraid it annoys mt to as i find it hard to read hahahah well if i were you dont take what you rmum says as fact as my mum banged on about my weight for along time im not saying your mum is wrong because mum only say these things because they are worried about you and want to help but go to your doctor and ask for some advice only way to sort the problme out really because they will chck to see if there are any underlying issues and if there are not they will try to help you in a constructive manner hope you dont feel bad about it because its nothing to be ashamed of in the end of the day we may me big but most of the time that can be changed if you want it so so all my support and feel free to pm me if you want any help xx

As the above, I struggled to read your post and must admit I did skip through some of it.

I can't remember if I have any GCSEs, certainly have no A Levels but I still manage to make legible posts.

I am sure that the OP did not write in this manner, in the exams she took to get her GCSE's and will not write like this in her degree (if she does she will fail, sadly). There are often underlying causes for being overweight (food intolerances being one of them), however this does not make it ok to ride a horse. A friend of mine lost 7 stones in wright, following being diagnosed with a whole raft of food intolerances and is now looking forward to having a try on another friends horse. It is not reasonable IMO to ride a horse when you are too heavy for the animal.

If you are being fastidious then you did not need to use two of your three commas and you spelt weight wrongly.

I assume this is in response to my post, I wasn't being fastidious, merely pointing out some truths and making a typographical error. I do hope that you don't intend to follow me round the forum picking holes in my posts, presumably because you are not in agreement with my views on horse slaughter, as putting people on UI is a nuisance. :)

Good Lord, children, it's like being at work already! Punctuation and paragraphs are marvelous things but some people have word blindness dyslexia.

Look it up before you start slagging them off for not using these things correctly.

I really think we ought to screen new members for academic brilliance. Not.

Iv stayed out off these threads up untill now.
Iv got no problem with larger riders if they have horses to carry them there isn't a problem.
As for spelling love I'm the same, I can't spell to save my life but read your post fine. My spelling gets picked on and iv had nasty comments reguarding this.
I am not a large rider but have friends who are large. You love your horses enjoy your hobbie so carry on and get let people get you down x

I don't think people have an issue with larger people riding?? I think what they have an issue with is when people get on a horse that it too small or a too finer build for them - they are kidding themselves and clearly don't care about the horse - it is a welfare issue, not an issue with a persons weight, and I would have no problem telling someone that they were too big for a horse if I thought the horse may be suffering.

I've been longing to point out that cinnamon has two nn (well 3 if you count the last one) and one m in it lol:D

OP, just stick a few commas in where you would normally breathe if you weren't having a rant. Welcome to the forum by the way :)

i found that hard to read too, it reads like a breathless confusing rant. as above, if you put a comma in wherever you'd take a breath if you were reading it aloud, that would help.
paragraphs help the reader too. it doesn't look like such a daunting dense block of text. if you want people on here to read your posts, it helps to make them accessible!

as for fat riders on horses - big riders on big-boned horses, no problemo. overweight riders on blood horses (or ponies) doing fastwork and/or lots of jumping - i have a bit of a problem with.

as for the old "the horse doesn't complain" one - jeeez, what's s/he supposed to do, put a hand in the air and say "excuse me, i'd rather not carry that much weight?!"
IF the horse does complain (buck, rear, refuse to go forward) s/he usually gets punishment. a lot of horses have learnt that it's easier in the long run to grin and bear it than to kick up a fuss and receive worse treatment.
someone came to try a pony here a week ago - a 14.1 quality pony. he (father of the child who was going to ride the pony) got on, started trotting and cantering around, eyeing up the jumps (pony had already been shown off very well over them, fwiw, hadn't put a foot wrong.) the father ignored my first two requests to know his weight, tried to laugh it off, then said he was 11 stone. hmm.
I then said that I'm less than that and I wouldn't ride a blood pony that small UNLESS it was to sort it out (if there was nobody smaller/lighter/as competent available), and only if it was being evil bucking children off etc. (i've done this, i got on an evil little 13.2 for 10 mins to remind it of its manners) - so, i'd only ride one that small/light as training/punishment, if you like.
btw, the pony was going fine for him, it didn't say a word about the extra weight. funny, that.
of course, it went far better for the next child to try, it all 6 stone of her, beautiful little rider... ;) ;)

just because a horse doesn't say NO, doesn't mean it's right.

weight loss isn't easy, we all know that. i have huge sympathy for anyone with a metabolic disorder or other health problem that prevents weight loss. BUT the majority of overweight people haven't got that excuse. there are excellent diets that encourage weight loss (i'm a huge fan of the Harcombe Diet, she's a qualified nutritionist and has worked out WHY we crave bad stuff etc, nothing to do with willpower) so for the majority of overweight people, it's a choice to be that big imho. fine if all you're sitting on is the sofa, not good if you want to ride a quality horse at speed etc imho.
this isn't aimed at the OP or anyone else, btw.

Fattist? :D Not me,I was overweight too..did`nt ride my horse as I did`nt feel it was fair.Lost five stone now..it just meant not pushing food through the hole in your face.Do liquids only for a month, that`s a good kick start..NOT alcohol or "diet" coke !As a diet doctor once said to a patient.."no one in Belsen failed to lose weight ,did they"?:D

Excellent post EK.

The last bit is just what I wanted to say but chickened out!

AND I get really pee`ed off with all these fatties who have "metabolic disorders".VERY VERY few have such things, and as soon as they get it sorted by dieting/gastric surgery whatever, well the weight comes off! Funny that.....AND another thing..practically all of them end up diabetic/heart probs/joint probs..and that costs the NHS (you and me fund that,by the way) money, so their lack of control costs YOU AND ME money. Rant over:mad:

It was more to do with Larger people riding unsuitable lightweight horses. Of course larger people should ride, no one thinks they shouldn't! BUT make sure the horse will be comfortable carrying your weight. Thats all!

ETA Not poo picking or having a lie in, won't cause suffering to the horse! Where as large person on an unsuitable horse would. It's not rocket science! Get a suitable horse and people won't have a problem. (not directed at OP, just in general)

finaly people are actually giving people with spelling problems advice rather than slating them!!
like everyone else said, put a comma where ever you would like to take a breath, and slow down abit, i can imagine you are trying to type very fast! take your time!
i don't have a problem with overweight riders if the horse is suitable for them, end of.

Some of the post on here are rude, and not at all helpful to the thread. If you have nothing polite to say, or cannot form a sentence without unnecessary insensitive comments then its best to say nothing ;)

Im sure some overweight people are that way because they are lazy, but how many people who ride regularly are going to be THAT lazy?? Im not hugely overweight, could just do with losing a couple of stone, but i resent the insinuation that because im overweight it must be that i cant stop eating...!! Everybody is different. For myself (and i suspect a lot of overweight riders) i do have a medical condition (PCOS) that makes it harder to lose weight and a lot easier to gain weight!! I have lost 2 stone since April on a very, very strict diet but not everyone wants to (quite literally...well, almost!lol) starve themselves to lose weight as long as they are comfortable with the weight they are. For me, i was always very slim (had a car crash and couldnt walk for over a year after having been incredibly active all my life, which is how the weight piled on) and the extra weight is not healthy for me and with the problems i have related to the car crash the weight is only adding to those, and also causing extra discomfort so it is important for me to lose it however i can, that doesnt mean everyone else should or could!

I do agree that you should ride a suitable horse for your weight, and if you are a heavier rider it is important to be balanced as being unbalanced often makes a rider heavier for the horse than the actual weight. But, i've not seen any pics on here of horses struggling to carry their riders so dont really understand the nasty comments.

I'm what you would call thin, but I know a girl who is quite a bit overweight. She is, however, a stunning rider - her seat is impeccable and she clearly rides "light". She has an ID X with good bone who is more than happy and together they really are a picture. She competes in dressage and it is clear that she is being marked down because of her weight as in terms of their performance they are always very well put together. Interestingly, when she's in the saddle she looks a lot slimmer than when she's on terra firma. One thing I think it's important to consider - a well educated over-weight rider who sits well has far less impact on a horse's back than a heavy rider who sits like a bag of spanners on the horse.

Right....
1) No one minds a larger person on a horse able to carry their weight- it is the overweight on fine types that shouldnt be happening
2)us fatties are NOT all fat, uneducated lazy's who slob around, sponging off the state, doing very little- FACT
3) Everyone will have a weight that they consider max for their horse---- this differs massively from person to person (ie some people will think the max weight for a 15hh cob to be 10 stone, others will think its closer to 16 stone)
4) Losing weight is not easy- if it was there would be no overweight people- those who have never been overweight/ had the desire to overeat, will NEVER get how the overweight feel/think/ their mindset, which is why you get the plain daft Belsen comments.
5) that is all :)

I am not fat but probably could be lighter but am suited to the horse i ride and him to me. It is not how fat you are but can your horse carry you comfortably.

There are some medical conditions which make you fat, my mum was a size 10 and had been all her life until she was diagnosed with a rare form a diabetes. The insulin which she must have causes an allergic reaction and makes her fat. No amount of dieting will make her loose weight it takes management to make sure she doesnt gain any more. These are however very unique circumstances, in most cases it is how much food you eat v how many calories you burn off.

As long as you horse can carry you comfortably for the activities you are doing then the actual weight in numbers is not relevant.

As a diet doctor once said to a patient.."no one in Belsen failed to lose weight ,did they"?:D

But some of them lost weight more slowly than others. Those who survived the starvation rations were not those who started off fattest but those with the bodies with the most efficient means of converting food into life - the ones with the lowest metabolic rates.

I know this post is old, but I've just spent about three hours on the phone to the OP (first time I've ever spoken to her) and she's LOVELY.

The above comments make me incredibly sad and are very, VERY hurtful to those of us who have conditions like this. I am not enormous by any means - I'm a size twelve who is a bit fuzzy round the edges, but with all the exercise I do I should technically be a size eight. I have PCOS which means that my body hits a certain level and then thinks it's never going to be fed again and so stores weight like crazy. I can't tell you how many times I've sat in a doctors office sobbing my heart out because they said the above to me, "you lack self control", "exercise more, eat less" etc etc. Until I was diagnosed. I muck out 22 horses a day, six days a week, and ride and do general yard chores and teach for the rest of the day. #

I don't only eat salad, I am, like everyone guilty of liking ice cream **HOW DISGUSTING OF ME!**, and occasionally I pig out on a whole bag of Minstrels, but I do enough hard physical activity to offset this... if I didn't have PCOS.

Yes there are people who lie on the sofa and eat rubbish all day and then try and get gastric bands on the NHS, but there are also thinner people out there who are lazy, rude and selfish - please don't tar everyone with the same brush. Please don't tell me that starving myself would work - I've been there, and collapsed whilst mucking out due to eating nothing but water that had had broccoli boiled in it for two months. I still didn't get past a size ten.
