So guys

Who out there doesn't feed a balancer? It wasn't that long ago that there was no such thing and horses still looked well and did well.

My lad is on Topspec Cool Balancer and has been for a few months (along with Copra Coolstance, micronised barley & Topspec Alphalpha Topchop). He's looking good weight wise, although I like to keep ontop of it as he was in poor condition when I got him and it's taken me a while to get it on him.

So my question is, do I really need this expensive balancer? I've thought about a vit&min supplement instead but it works out just as expensive. I read that horses get all the vits&mins they need from grass, so would a grass pellet do the trick (grass that's been pelleted at the peak of it's condition in summer)?

I feed Top Spec Lite (with Linseed oil) and that's it, plus ad-lib forage. It's £25 a bag, which lasts a long time, and imho, worth every penny - pony loves it and has never looked better, and his barefeet are fab.

I can't see how a grass pellet is comparable - I would never feed that to my lad for fear of lami (just the thought of feeding extra grass makes me shiver ;))
