My horse has come in lame this morning on his near fore - he will bear weight on it but is obvioulsy not comfortable. My gut feeling is maybe a strain or slip as he was turned out on a new paddock yesterday, which is quite hilly, and as we had so much rain would have been quite slippy. He was sound when ridden yesterday, and can not find any heat, or anything out of the ordinary.
I have the farrier booked for Tues am and will speak to my vet tomorrow, but is it best to keep him in until seen, or turn back out?
Thanks for any advice.

Personally I don't like box rest as mine go loopy on it, so I fence out a tiny piece of the field with electric and put them in there. Can you do something similar? That way he is out eating grass, but not able to run around and do himself more damage.

Hope it's nothing serious!

So do I!!! (and apologies for typo!)
He is normally quite when turned out but if it is a strain, would moving about on it further excerbate the problem? But then no movement at all may not help either!

Honestly Sidney, it could be so many things that it would be impossible to advise with any certainty. There is an argument that the horse should be kept in, just in case. But there's the opposite argument that says the horse could cause further damage if kept in, perhaps on his own, and would do something daft like attempt to jump out of the stable. I'm with booboos on this, ie turn out in a tiny patch of electric femced grass. However, if there's any chance at all that he's done something serious, then I guess you have to weigh things up and make a decision. Not easy but there again you will be speaking to your vet on Monday so the horse wouldn't be in for long x
