11.Should Bute be used for short-term injury only and not used as a long-term pain-relief for ridden horses?
No

12. Would you prefer you use herbal remedies as an alternative to chemical medicine?
Yes No (Would prefer too but if bute works more effectivley then I would choose that. I use both bute and herbal remedies)

Any further comments/ reasoning’s please add below…

I use Osmonds Bute-X (Glucosamine, Chrondroitin, Devils claw supplement) alongside bute with my horse who has long term lameness problems (arthritis). Whilst I understand bute is not ideal for long term use, due to the effect it can have on the liver/kidneys etc, he is regularly urine tested for problems with liver/kidney functions, and I would rather have my horse 99% sound, and not in pain and hacked out 2 times a week to stop his joints stiffening (as suggested by the vet) than in pain and field sound only. Hence my reasoning for using bute on a long term basis.

1.Are you a horse owner/sharer/loaner?
Yes

2.How often do you ride?
Once a week 2-3 week Every Day Monthly Yearly
6 days per week in summer months and 2 days per week in winter months

5.Why did the horse need Bute?
Injury (cuts, swelling, heat in limb) Lameness Colic Other

Vet

7.Who made the decision to use Bute?
Prior to vet coming out I decided to give him some bute as he was showing signs of lameness. Then the vet advised treatment to include bute

8.Do you know the pros and cons of Bute?
Maybe

9.Do you know how long it takes for Bute to leave the system?
3-4 Days 1 week 2 Weeks 3-4 Weeks
Not sure but I would suggest a couple of days depending on the dose given

10.Do you think Bute should be illegal in competition?
Yes as the horse must be in some level of discomfort surely?

11.Should Bute be used for short-term injury only and not used as a long-term pain-relief for ridden horses?
Not always practical to have a black and white solution. Long term drug use is not good generally but usually the lesser of the two evils.

12. Would you prefer you use herbal remedies as an alternative to chemical medicine?
Yes but only if they were going to work as effectively

13. Do you think herbal remedies work?
Never tried them

13 depends on illness - most drugs are derived from plant life anyway.
If bute is used with criteria it is very useful. As with any drug, it should not be used for no good reason and without medical advice. It should also not be used to mask problems.

Hi Emma,

You might be worth getting you supervisor to take a look at your questionnaire so that you can get some meaninful data out of it. A lot of it is open to interpretation. Would be a shame to do a load of work for not a great output. I will answer as best I can and also give some pointers ...

Not allowed in most equine disciplines except Polo - PS, I think you are allowed in BSJA, might need to check that one

1.Are you a horse owner/sharer/loaner?

Yes

2.How often do you ride?

3 - 4 times a week

3.Do you keep your horses at home or on a yard?

Yard

4.Has your horse been treated with Bute?

Yes - all of them over the years both short and long term

5.Why did the horse need Bute?

Injury (cuts, swelling, heat in limb) - all of them apart from Chancer at some point have had bute for this.
Lameness - All OAPS and Farra for her abcess
Other - Chancer - after being gelded

6.Who supplied you with the Bute?

Vet and later when needing in bulk - online ordering to save money

7.Who made the decision to use Bute?

Vet/Yourself - depending on what was wrong.

8.Do you know the pros and cons of Bute?

Yes - probably most of what is needed to know

9.Do you know how long it takes for Bute to leave the system?
3-4 Days 1 week 2 Weeks 3-4 Weeks -

Depends on whether you mean for pain relief - 3 -4 days or competition - 2 weeks is required.

10.Do you think Bute should be illegal in competition?

Yes - horses should not be ridden when in pain at competition level. Ok for stiffness in an oldie but not so it can jump etc.

11.Should Bute be used for short-term injury only and not used as a long-term pain-relief for ridden horses?

No - I have used it long term on my older horses for their comfort, much as I would take an asprin.

12. Would you prefer you use herbal remedies as an alternative to chemical medicine?

Yes for mild pain but at the end of the day bute is needed for anything other than minor pain.

13. Do you think herbal remedies work?

To a certain extent

Any further comments/ reasoning’s please add below….

When I had OAPs, I always had bute on hand for those days when they looked stiff or not 100%. I also gave my first TB one every other day before we had all the joint supplements now available to prevent arthritus and also to keep her comfortable. Cairo was on it the last 6 months of his life to keep him comfortable.

I also gave it to Farra (after speaking to vet on phone) when she went lame for a few days to see if she improved).

Excellent stuff and when experienced in using it, I think owners can use it themselves if familiar with the horse and why it is needed, ie old age or old injury that flares up, but if after a few days, no improvement, vet should be called for at least a phone conversation.

Lameness and Colic

6.Who supplied you with the Bute?

7.Who made the decision to use Bute?
Vet and myself

8.Do you know the pros and cons of Bute?
Yes, some

9.Do you know how long it takes for Bute to leave the system?
I heard 3-5days, but it can vary depending on the horse so to be safe I would leave it a week.

10.Do you think Bute should be illegal in competition?
Difficult question, as some people would abuse the right to use it to keep a ame horse sound, and could therefor do more damage to the horse, however, I think that there should be some way of making it lega with a vets note. For example, my horse was treated with bute for colic, and I was due to be competing that weekend. Due to the fact that she had been treated we did not compete her, which was a shame as at 3 days after she had been treated she had recovered from the colic, and the bute would be unikely to be having any affect on her.

11.Should Bute be used for short-term injury only and not used as a long-term pain-relief for ridden horses?
I'm not sure of the effects of long-term bute on horses. If they are not too bad, then I think it could be a good way of maintaining a horse with artheritis for example.

12. Would you prefer you use herbal remedies as an alternative to chemical medicine?
Whilst I think some herbal supplements genuinely do work, there are many products that are a con, so you have to be very selective when choosing herbal remedies.

13. Do you think herbal remedies work?
Some of them

My old boy who is retired is on a satchet of Danilon (very similar to Bute) once every day. He has arthritis and the vet suggested this would be the best thing to do. He is very happy in himself and so I do not see any reason why Bute shouldn't be used long term, if it for the right reasons and if the vet has recommended it.
